What did he get up to while he was in town? \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to pause and look carefully at Oxford city centre\, noticing Elizabethan and Jacobean details you might pass by every day. The tour includes a unique Tudor bedroom above Cornmarket Street\, the famous Painted Room\, which will be opened specially by Oxford Preservation Trust\, just for us! \n\n\n\nWant to know more about Elizabethan eating and drinking\, entertainment and travel? Or the rollercoaster of religious change in Tudor and Stuart England? Led by historian Dr Elizabeth Sandis\, this is a Shakespeare-themed journey through Oxford’s famous streets. \n\n\n\nAt the end\, there will be an optional 20-minute extension to the tour (included in the price)\, exploring Tudor and Stuart treasures in the Museum of Oxford’s galleries. \n\n\n\nJoin a Shakespeare and Oxford walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and learn about a fascinating period in its history through the eyes of its most celebrated literary figure.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Length: approx. 1.2 miles / 1.9 km. She researches the way in which the Classical culture of Greece and Rome impacted on English society and values during the early modern period. \n\n\n\nWith a passion for local history and theatre\, she enjoys translating and staging examples of the kind of plays students were producing in Oxford during the time of Shakespeare. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. In 1979 Fairport decided to call it a day and\, having opened up for Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in the early afternoon\, tore across the country in their van to do an outdoor Farewell concert at Peewit Farm on Station Road in Cropredy. \n\n\n\nA year later\, they decided to reconvene with some friends for what would become their annual reunion. Although they had performed in Cropredy before\, 1980 is the year Fairport recognise as the first Cropredy Festival. The festival has continued (on various sites\, including Broughton Castle) up to the present day\, increasing in size from a couple of thousand to its current capacity of 20\,000. \n\n\n\nCropredy is a music festival – it could never be pigeon-holed as a folk festival. Along with the finest in folk and folk-rock – Lindisfarne\, Julie Fowlis\, Steeleye Span\, Ralph McTell\, Cara Dillon – the Cropredy audience has witnessed the likes of Alice Cooper\, Robert Plant\, Status Quo\, Steve Winwood and Buzzcocks. Basically\, whatever music Fairport like is what ends up on the bill. \n\n\n\nAnd\, bucking current trends\, the Cropredy Festival has always stuck to the one-stage idea. The advantage to the customer is that they won’t miss anyone. The advantage to the performer is that no matter how far down the bill they are\, they are guaranteed to be performing in front of at least 10k people. Beats being stuck in an ‘Unsigned’ tent in some remote corner of a forgotten field for sure. \n\n\n\nThe Cropredy ‘Fringe’ – entertainment provided by the two pubs in the village – act as satellite stages. Indeed\, many of the acts that have appeared at the festival have performed at The Brasenose Arms and The Red Lion on their way.
