SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Christoph Eschenbach
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Christoph Eschenbach\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Christoph Eschenbach\n\n\n\nMendelssohn Overture to Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Op. 21 \n\n\n\nBach Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major\, BWV 1042 \n\n\n\nMendelssohn Symphony No. 4 in A major\, Op. 90\, ‘Italian’ \n\n\n\nChristoph Eschenbach conductor \n\n\n\nThomas Zehetmair violin \n\n\n\nTwo things inspired Mendelssohn more than anything else: travel and literature. This concert under Christoph Eschenbach celebrates both\, opening with all the magic and mystery of the composer’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, the play by Shakespeare for which he wrote extensive incidental music\, and concluding with the boundless exhilaration and joy of his Italian Symphony\, which overflows with the composer’s unique brand of perfected spontaneity. \n\n\n\nBetween them comes the Violin Concerto in E minor from Mendelssohn’s other great love: Bach. \n\n\n\nThis concert contains a pre-concert talk from Stephen Carpenter which runs from 6.30pm to 6.55pm. \n\n\n\nMendelssohn in Italy– an illustrated talk by Stephen Carpenter \n\n\n\nThis talk will give an account of the Italian journey undertaken by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830 and 1831. It was a journey that would inspire Mendelssohn to write one of his best-loved works\, Symphony No. 4 – the ‘Italian’. This was the continuation of his “Grand Tour” which had begun in England and (unusually) Scotland in 1829 and now took him to Italy\, which was the country visited by many young men of means in the early 18th century. \n\n\n\nThe talk will bring Mendelssohn’s journey vividly to life by showing several of the fine sketches and watercolours that he made during his travels\, and give an introduction to the ‘Italian’ Symphony that brings the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert to a close. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\nStandard tickets – From £20.00 \n\n\n\nStudent – From £5.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 20 March 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\n6+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.

SUMMARY:Levellers
DESCRIPTION:Levellers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Levellers\n\n\n\nAfter two highly acclaimed acoustic tours and albums in recent years\, the Levellers Collective has announced a new 17-date tour in Spring 2025 at theatres and venues around the country plus a Live Album & DVD. \n\n\n\nThe Collective live shows\, and albums\, came about after the Levellers decided to do something a bit different with their extensive back catalogue in 2018. SUMMARY:Opus 48: Mendelssohn Elijah
DESCRIPTION:Opus 48 Mendelssohn Elijah\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Opus 48: Mendelssohn Elijah\n\n\n\nJoin Opus 48 for Mendelssohn’s dramatic oratorio Elijah. They are joined by some of the country’s best up and coming soloists and the historically-informed players of the Musical and Amicable Society for a performance that will awaken you to every detail of this incredible score. \n\n\n\nOpus 48 shows off its incredible versatility as the choir takes many roles throughout the piece while the story unfolds. Mendelssohn’s musical and dramatic choices suggest the stuff of opera – shouting crowds\, a vengeful Queen\, and a flaming chariot – yet Elijah is grounded in a profoundly spiritual\, devotional ethos. \n\n\n\nThe work as a whole\, through its choruses and words\, professes timeless spiritual values\, stressing the worth of endurance and perseverance\, and the importance of hope amid despair. \n\n\n\nIf you enjoy Handel oratorios\, then you will recognise his influences in Mendelssohn’s epic\, Biblical drama – together with Bach-inspired worshipful reflective moments. Elijah was a ‘grand and mighty prophet … borne on the wings of angels’\, brought thrillingly alive in this piece. It is truly a masterpiece that deserves its place as one of the monumental compositions of the 19th century. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a longtime fan of choral music or just looking for a gripping evening out\, this concert promises to be a real highlight. Get your tickets now and immerse yourself in this extraordinary music! \n\n\n\nOpus 48 – named in honour of Fauré’s Requiem – is an exciting medium-sized choral society in Oxfordshire\, performing an impressive range of repertoire to the very highest standard. Opus 48 rehearses and performs under the baton of Musical Director\, David Crown\, one of the leading choral conductors in the UK. SUMMARY:Oxford Harmonic Choir: Rossini's Stabat Mater & Mozart's Coronation Mass
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Harmonic Choir: Rossini’s Stabat Mater & Mozart’s Coronation Mass\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Harmonic Choir: Rossini’s Stabat Mater & Mozart’s Coronation Mass\n\n\n\nSusan Young – soprano \n\n\n\nHeather Jill Burns – mezzo-soprano \n\n\n\nAustin Gunn – tenor \n\n\n\nJames Cleverton – baritone \n\n\n\nThe Stabat Mater is a 13th-century meditation on the anguish the Virgin Mary would have felt on witnessing Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. This text has inspired some of the most memorable and imaginative choral music ever written\, from the Renaissance into the present day. Rossini’s 1841 setting is no exception. \n\n\n\nIt is cut from the same cloth as the later Verdi Requiem\, in that it lays the text’s raw emotion bare using Italian opera techniques. It also makes extraordinary demands on the soloists\, which is probably why it is rarely performed! Mozart’s Coronation Mass is one of his most popular settings of the Mass. \n\n\n\nComposed in Salzburg after he was appointed court organist and composer at Salzburg Cathedral\, it is celebratory throughout. The soprano solo Agnus Dei bears a striking resemblance to the Countess’s aria Dove Sono from Figaro. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £15.00 to £30.00 \n\n\n\nStudents and under 18s half price in the Semi-circle and Upper Gallery only (proof of status required). \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 23 March 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.
