SUMMARY:Music at Oxford: Fretwork My Days – A Celebration of Orlando Gibbons
DESCRIPTION:Music at Oxford: Fretwork My Days – A Celebration of Orlando Gibbons\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Music at Oxford: Fretwork My Days – A Celebration of Orlando Gibbons\n\n\n\nPioneering viol consort Fretwork is joined by the cream of British singing talent for a celebration of the astonishingly rich music of composer Orlando Gibbons. \n\n\n\nThe concert includes two of his great anthems\, some of his greatest consort music – possibly the finest chamber music ever composed in England – his moving tribute to Prince Henry\, and the riotous and irreverent Cries of London. A vocal and instrumental tour de force\, where street traders shout out news of their wares\, and we can buy fish\, apple pies\, chestnuts\, cabbage\, ink\, oysters\, waistcoats; even a poking stick with a dubious handle… \n\n\n\nAll of Jacobean life\, packed into a few minutes. Bringing the celebration up to date is a piece by acclaimed composer Nico Muhly. With its hazy harmony and unexpected twists\, it is a fitting tribute to Gibbons and the Elizabethan and Tudor musical tradition. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Fretwork celebrated 35 years of performing music old and new\, and looks forward to a challenging and exciting future as the world’s leading consort of viols. \n\n\n\nIn these last three and a half decades\, they have explored the core repertory of great English consort music\, from Taverner to Purcell\, and made classic recordings against which others are judged. \n\n\n\nTheir series of discs for Virgin Classics included CDs devoted to William Lawes\, Henry Purcell\, William Byrd\, Matthew Locke\, John Dowland and Orlando Gibbons; while their more recent work for Harmonia Mundi USA has produced three discs of J.S.Bach — The Art of Fugue\, Alio Modo and The Goldberg Variations — which have been exuberantly praised; and discs of the earliest instrumental music (Petrucci); Sir John Tavener’s The Hidden Face; Thomas Tomkins; Alexander Agricola & Fabrice Fitch; Ludwig Senfl with Charles Daniels and two collaborations with the choir of Magdalen College\, Oxford. \n\n\n\nTheir recording of concert songs by William Byrd with Emma Kirkby has received particular praise. \n\n\n\nIn addition to this\, Fretwork have become known as pioneers of contemporary music for viols\, having commissioned over 40 new works. The list of composers is like the role call of the most prominent writers of our time: George Benjamin\, Michael Nyman\, Sir John Tavener\, Gavin Bryars\, Elvis Costello\, Nico Muhly\, John Woolrich\, Orlando Gough\, Sally Beamish\, Tan Dun\, Barry Guy\, Thea Musgrave – to name but a few. \n\n\n\nThe group now frequently presents programmes consisting entirely of contemporary music\, though most audiences find that the creative tension of juxtaposing old and new leads to a thrilling experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFull Price: £29.00 – £45.00    \n\n\n\nConcession: £14.50 – £22.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 07 June 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPlease note that Jeremy Budd has been replaced by Simon Wall in this performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SJE Arts Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSJE Arts Oxford is a concert venue and arts organisation based at St John the Evangelist Church on Iffley Road\, Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe church itself was built in the 19th century as part of a monastery established by the Cowley Fathers\, an Anglican religious community. SUMMARY:Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse
DESCRIPTION:Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse\n\n\n\nPresented by The Cosmic Shambles Network  \n\n\n\nA journey through the minds that populate the planet and may populate the universe beyond. \n\n\n\nAn hour of joy and curiosity with the presenter of the multi-award-winning Infinite Monkey Cage. Expect stories of chimpanzees and astronauts\, of starlight and falcons. We are the neurodiversity of the universe\, a place of many minds and many imaginations.   \n\n\n\nIn his books\, such as The Importance of Being Interested and Normally Weird…Weirdly Normal\, Robin has looked at the psychological and the astronomical\, engaging with artists and astrophysicists. This new show is a celebration of our possibilities in a time when we have given too many platforms to the mean and the bullying\, let us elevate those who strive for beauty and camaraderie.  \n\n\n\nWith Professor Brian Cox\, Robin has presented over two hundred episodes of the Infinite Monkey Cage and toured the arenas of the world. He has won awards for his books\, his comedy\, and his science communication. If you have never seen him before\, expect fireworks and undiluted passion.   \n\n\n\nAbout Robin Ince  \n\n\n\nRobin Ince is many things. A comedian\, an author\, a broadcaster\, and a populariser of scientific ideas. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. \n\n\n\nHe is probably best known as the co-host of the Sony Gold Award-winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox. The Guardian once wrote that\, “When someone writes a history of modern comedy\, they should make room for Robin Ince” and of his latest show The Scotsman described it as an “alchemic mix of enthusiasm\, knowledge and observation.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat the critics say\n\n\n\n\n“You need Robin Ince in your life.” \n\n\n\nNatalie Haynes  \n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the UK’s most accomplished comedians.” \n\n\n\nThe Bookseller  \n\n\n\n\n\n“Joyfully entertaining. Full of warmth\, wisdom\, and affectionate delight in the wonder and absurdity of being human.” \n\n\n\nObserver on I’m a Joke and So Are You  \n\n\n\n\n\n“A delightful and scintillating hymn to science.” \n\n\n\nProfessor Carlo Rovelli on The Importance of Being Interested  \n\n\n\n\n\n“When someone writes a history of modern comedy\, they should make room for Robin Ince.” \n\n\n\nTime Out  \n\n\n\n\n\n“An alchemic mix of enthusiasm\, knowledge\, and observation. SUMMARY:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation
DESCRIPTION:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\nPollution of the Thames River and its tributaries has reached record levels in the past two years. Locally\, outrage has tended to be mixed with an acute sense of loss\, disempowerment\, frustration\, and grief. Tamesis Unweaving aims to develop ways of addressing and acknowledging these emotions\, through collective discussion\, introspection\, creativity\, and action.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop will focus on the Tamesis robe\, currently on display in the Lower galleries of the OFS\, and use textile art to provide a framework for talking about and processing ecological emotions\, putting names to undefined feelings\, re-stitching our connections to the more-than-human-world in an approachable\, accessible way\, and helping our community find pathways towards taking action\, through citizen science\, art\, and activism. \n\n\n\nLed by artist Anya Gleizer\, the workshop will involve quilting and embroidery\, drawing\, and water-based painting. The results of each workshop will be added (with your permission!) to the Tamesis Robe\, a tapestry garment whose train is a to-scale large-scale map of the Thames Watershed. Over time\, the piece\, and the workshops\, will tour to more communities along the Thames River watershed\, adding further depth to the collective artwork. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 08 June 2025 at 10.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nThis event is held in association with the Right Here\, Right Now Global Climate Summit\, as part of the Oxford Local Programme of events themed around climate change\, human rights\, and climate justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Old Fire Station\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Fire Station in Oxford is an arts centre with a unique social mission\, combining creativity with community impact.
