SUMMARY:The Marian Consort: Seeing through Sound
DESCRIPTION:The Marian Consort: Seeing through Sound\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Marian Consort: Seeing through Sound\n\n\n\nA visual and aural feast featuring some of the greatest painters and composers of the Renaissance. \n\n\n\nExperience an event that vividly reveals how Renaissance art is full of sound. Angels sing out from altarpieces\, ancient gods and goddesses compete in musical contests\, and music provides an essential backdrop to sensuous\, amorous encounters. \n\n\n\nMusic of the Renaissance by composers including Guillaume Dufay and Josquin combines beautiful new music by Barbara Monk Feldman\, providing a contemporary meditation on the experience of viewing art. \n\n\n\nThis project is supported by the University of Sheffield\, with the project advisor\, Prof. Tim Shephard\, giving a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm. \n\n\n\nPlease note this concert will not have an interval other than a 30 minute break between the pre-concert talk and the start of the main concert. \n\n\n\nNew this year – buy your programme in advance. \n\n\n\nNo need to tap your card or scramble for change\, simply purchase your programme in advance when you buy your tickets online. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists \n\n\n\nThe Marian Consort is a vocal ensemble that presents bold and thrilling performances for audiences across the UK\, Europe\, and North America. Led by founder and director\, Rory McCleery\, the group is composed of the very best singers in a flexible\, intimate ensemble\, allowing clarity of texture and subtlety of interpretation that illuminates the music for audience and performer alike. \n\n\n\nTMC features regularly on BBC Radio 3 and has released twelve recordings to critical acclaim\, praised for ‘precision and pellucid textures’ (The Times). \n\n\n\nHailed as ‘brilliant discoverers\, and exponents\, of rare repertoire’ (The Observer)\, The Marian Consort performs music from the fifteenth century to the present day\, with a focus on bringing to light and championing lesser-known works by composers such as Vicente Lusitano\, Raffaella Aleotti\, and Jean Maillard\, reinvigorating their music for today’s listeners. \n\n\n\nCreating new music is of vital importance to TMC\, and in recent years it has commissioned Electra Perivolaris\, Cheryl Frances-Hoad\, Roderick Williams\, David Fennessy\, and Ben Rowarth. \n\n\n\nThe Marian Consort is a pioneer of projects which take audiences beyond the confines of the traditional concert\, most notably ‘Breaking the Rules’\, a staged concert-drama based on the life and crimes of Carlo Gesualdo called ‘Daring and Vivid’ by The Guardian. Other highlights include a debut at the BBC Proms; performances in the Bascule Chamber underneath London’s Tower Bridge; the premiere of Dani Howard’s ‘Unbound’ at Three Choirs Festival; and a Wigmore Hall recital presented in partnership with BBC Radio 3. The Marian Consort made its debut tour of Japan in 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“The quality of the voices was exceptional.” \n\n\n\nMarian Consort audience member \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n£10.50 – £32.00 \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices:Full price – £21.00 – £32.00Standard concession – £10.50 – £16.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times:Wednesday 29 January 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time:1 hour\, including an interval between talk and performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SJE Arts Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSJE Arts Oxford is a concert venue and arts organisation based at St John the Evangelist Church on Iffley Road\, Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe church itself was built in the 19th century as part of a monastery established by the Cowley Fathers\, an Anglican religious community. SUMMARY:Miles Jupp: On I Bang
DESCRIPTION:Miles Jupp: On I Bang\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Miles Jupp: On I Bang\n\n\n\nFollowing his sell-out visit in February 2024 we are delighted to announce the welcome return of Miles Jupp with his show On I Bang. \n\n\n\nSince Miles’ last tour finished at The London Palladium in 2017\, he’s been in The Full Monty on Disney Plus\, The Durrells and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? on ITV\, as well as a heap of episodes of Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and Have I Got News For You. \n\n\n\nHe’s made an award-winning radio series\, he’s published a novel and he’s played the Emperor of Austria and Europe in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. \n\n\n\nYet one sunny day in the middle of all this\, he suddenly suffered a brain seizure. This led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a cherry tomato\, and a rather pressing need to undergo major neurosurgery. SUMMARY:Angela Hewitt – SJE Arts International Piano Series
DESCRIPTION:Angela Hewitt – SJE Arts International Piano Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Angela Hewitt – SJE Arts International Piano Series\n\n\n\nHandel Suite no.2 in F major\, HWV427 \n\n\n\nJ.S. Bach French Suite no. 6 in E major\, BWV817 \n\n\n\nHaydn Sonata in E-flat major\, Hob. XVI` \n\n\n\nInterval \n\n\n\nHandel Chaconne in G major\, HWV435 \n\n\n\nBrahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel\, op. 24 \n\n\n\nAngela Hewitt occupies a commanding position on the international stage\, sought after as a recitalist and for collaboration with leading orchestras. Her many awards include Companion of the Order of Canada; an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II\, and the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig\, given in recognition of a lifetime’s dedication to the music of J.S. Bach. \n\n\n\nAngela’s programme is a joyful celebration of the Baroque. A lovely Italianate suite by Handel\, with more than a hint of the opera aria\, is followed by Bach’s sparkling baroque dances. The Haydn sonata brings a change of mood: grand and spacious\, it is his final piano sonata and is generally accepted as his greatest. \n\n\n\nPost interval\, Handel’s delightful Chaconne precedes Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel. The theme is the Air from Handel’s B-flat major harpsichord suite\, a simple melody Brahms teases\, and toys with through twenty-five kaleidoscopic and brilliantly structured variations. Brahms greatly admired Handel. This is a wonderful tribute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n£25.00 – £40.00 \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\n£25.00 – £40.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times:Tuesday 21 January 2025 at 7.30pmDoors open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time:120 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance:5+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SJE Arts Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSJE Arts Oxford is a concert venue and arts organisation based at St John the Evangelist Church on Iffley Road\, Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe church itself was built in the 19th century as part of a monastery established by the Cowley Fathers\, an Anglican religious community.
