The other is the Summer Eights. \n\n\n\nOxford‘s Torpids take place annually about the 7th week of Hilary Term (around the start of March) on four successive days from Wednesday to Saturday. \n\n\n\nThe racing takes place on The Isis\, a length of the River Thames in Oxford\, which is generally too narrow for side-by-side racing\, so the races follow the ‘Bumps’ format\, a form of rowing race in which several boats chase each other in single file\, where the aim to catch and ‘bump’ the boat ahead to climb the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end of the stretch (near Donnington Bridge)\, each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving around 1.5 lengths between each. The start of racing is signalled by the firing of a cannon. There are three gun signals – a five-minute gun\, a one-minute gun and the starting gun. \n\n\n\nOnce a bump has occurred\, both crews involved in the bump stop racing and move to the side to allow the rest of the division to pass. The ultimate aim of a crew is to become ‘Head of the River’ (top of the first division) and stay there. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is possible to ‘over bump’ if the 2 crews in front of your boat bump (and so drop out)\, and your boat can catch the one in front of them. Each year\, students\, residents and visitors gather to welcome the first day of May with music\, procession and revelry in the heart of the city. \n\n\n\nMusic and ceremony at Magdalen Tower \n\n\n\nFrom around 5.00am\, crowds start assembling under Magdalen Tower\, along the High Street\, and on Magdalen Bridge. Students and fellows of Magdalen College gather in the college cloisters and atop the college towers in preparation for the main event. \n\n\n\nAt 6.00am\, the Magdalen College Choir perform the Hymnus Eucharisticus\, a hymn composed in the 17th century by the College’s choirmaster Benjamin Rogers\, from the top of the 144ft tower. The choir also sings three traditional madrigals\, including the perennial favourite Now Is the Month of Maying\, alongside prayers for the city led by the Dean of Divinity. \n\n\n\nWhen the choir concludes\, the Magdalen Tower bells ring for around 20 minutes\, marking the start of the day’s celebrations. A procession moves from Magdalen Bridge up the High Street and into the city centre\, setting the tone for hours of dancing\, music\, and spontaneous festivities that bring Oxford’s communities together. \n\n\n\nDancing and revelry across the city \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, May Morning features Morris dancing on Broad Street\, Catte Street\, under the Bridge of Sighs\, in front of St John’s College on St Giles\, and on the forecourt of the Ashmolean Museum. In this style of racing\, boats chase each other in single file\, aiming to catch and ‘bump’ the crew ahead to move up the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end near Donnington Bridge\, with each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving roughly 1.5 lengths between boats. After the three-and-a-half hours cut-off time\, runners will not be stopped. Instead\, stewards will ask any runners left to move to the pavement so streets can reopen. Their medals will still be waiting for them at the finish line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get to the Oxford Half Marathon?+\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, if you can’t get there by foot\, we advice you to travel by public transport. Any runners relying on travelling by car\, however\, should use either the Redbridge Park & Ride or Thornhill Park & Ride sites because the city centre will have various road closures in place on the day (more on these later). \n\n\n\nIN previouse events\, parking and bus tickets were available in advance (up to four days before the date of travel) via the RingGo app. Tickets provide return travel to central Oxford and 12 hours of parking. Anyone who has purchased in advance will just need to show the driver their RingGo app confirmation. Up to two adult tickets per car can be purchased in this way; if you have more than two adults travelling\, additional return travel can be bought in person on the day. \n\n\n\nThere are no train services from London that arrive in Oxford in time for you to make the start line on time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre there any road closures?+\n\n\n\n\nYes\, there will be a lot of road closures in place during the event – with the majority closing from 8.00am on Sunday (Holywell Street\, however\, will shut at 6.00am). Others will be closed from Saturday. \n\n\n\nRoads will then begin reopening gradually from 11.00am (Magdalen Street East and St Giles) until the final roads (Broad Street\, Museum Road\, and Parks Road) reopen at 6.0pm. \n\n\n\nFull details of road closures – including details of closures the day before the race – can be found at \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere are the best places for spectators?+\n\n\n\n\nBeing a city centre half marathon\, there is no bad place from which to cheer the runners as they go by. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of places where the route will provide an amazing backdrop for photos of friends and family out on the course and other spots where you’ll be able to see people go by twice as they loop back down the same road. \n\n\n\nCheck out the map for a better idea of where to stand – it may depend on where you think the person you’re supporting could most do with seeing a friendly face in the crowd. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be on-course entertainment?+\n\n\n\n\nPlenty. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. All stocked with an array of drinks and snacks. \n\n\n\nThere is a cloakroom located in the stalls bar. If this is closed\, please speak to a member of staff. £1 per item.
