SUMMARY:Britten\, Bridge & Elgar - Oxford Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Britten\, Bridge & Elgar – Oxford Symphony Orchestra \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Britten\, Bridge & Elgar – Oxford Symphony Orchestra \n\n\n\nBritten – Four Sea Interludes \n\n\n\nBridge – Oration \n\n\n\nElgar – Falstaff \n\n\n\nTim Posner cello \n\n\n\nRobert Max conductor \n\n\n\nBritten’s Four Sea Interludes\, from his opera Peter Grimes\, focus on the sea and the inhabitants of a fishing village. The interludes are used for changing scenes within the opera\, and portray different moods\, from a sea dawn to a stormy maelstrom. \n\n\n\nBridge’s Oration\, played for us by Tim Posner\, is in the style of a cello concerto. This hidden gem is an expressive work\, written to express grief over the tragedy of war. \n\n\n\nElgar had long admired Shakespeare’s plays\, and wrote this symphonic study to portray Falstaff. \n\n\n\nThe four movements\, and two interludes\, capture scenes from Falstaff’s life\, including: Falstaff and Prince Hal in the Boar’s Head\, Falstaff jesting with the landlady\, and Falstaff hurrying to London for the pomp and circumstance of the coronation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFull price tickets – £18.00 \n\n\n\nConcessions – £10.00 \n\n\n\nAccompanied under-16s and wheelchair companions – Free \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 20 June 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 19:00Latecomers to be permitted after the first piece or during the interval \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\nApproximately two hours with an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\nNot suitable for very young children and not geared specifically towards children\, but generally OK for children who are happy to sit for an hour at a time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.

SUMMARY:Richard Ayoade - Afterthoughts
DESCRIPTION:Richard Ayoade – Afterthoughts \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Richard Ayoade – Afterthoughts \n\n\n\nJoin BAFTA-winning actor\, comedian\, director\, and writer Richard Ayoade for an evening of reflections as he shares insights from his latest book\, Afterthoughts\, or Some Pistachios Won’t Open: Wisdom for the Unreflective. \n\n\n\nPartially recognisable for being in The IT Crowd\, his acclaimed films Submarine and The Double\, he has also hosted TV landfill like Travel Man and The Crystal Maze\, and lent his nasal voice to The Boxtrolls\, Early Man\, Soul and The Bad Guys. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Richard Ayoade – Afterthoughts \n\n\n\nBut you may well know him best for his role as ‘photographer’ in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers in which he delivered the iconic line: ‘Please\, Mer Sellers\, can I get a shot of you and your mum?’ \n\n\n\nNow\, in the midst of some self-inflicted financial difficulty\, he turns to the stage\, inviting you to explore over 500 of his colossal notions. Thoughts like… \n\n\n\nWhere’s the box to tick if you ARE a robot? \n\n\n\nIf\, when one door shuts\, another door opens\, there’s something wrong with your doors. SUMMARY:Forest Live at Westonbirt Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:About Forest Live at Westonbirt Arboretum\n\n\n\nSet within one of the UK’s most celebrated tree collections\, Westonbirt Arboretum becomes something entirely different each summer when it hosts Forest Live — the Forestry England concert series that transforms ancient woodland into a natural amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nPresented by Forestry England\, the Westonbirt dates are often considered among the most atmospheric in the entire Forest Live calendar. Here\, music doesn’t just fill a space; it sits within it\, framed by towering maples\, historic avenues\, and the quiet geometry of the arboretum’s landscape design. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA concert stage carved into the woodland\n\n\n\nUnlike traditional festival sites\, Westonbirt doesn’t impose itself on the landscape. Instead\, the stage is carefully integrated into open glades within the arboretum\, with natural gradients forming gentle viewing terraces. \n\n\n\nAs evening falls\, light rigs cut through the tree line\, while the surrounding canopy absorbs the sound and softens it — creating a listening experience that feels unusually intimate\, even for headline acts. \n\n\n\nAudiences typically arrive early\, settling into the space with blankets\, chairs\, and picnics as the arboretum slowly shifts from daytime calm to concert energy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Westonbirt atmosphere\n\n\n\nWhat sets Westonbirt apart in the Forest Live series is its mood. It feels less like a festival site and more like a shared gathering in a living landscape. \n\n\n\nExpect: \n\n\n\n\nLong golden-hour performances as daylight filters through the trees\n\n\n\nA relaxed\, picnic-led audience culture rather than tightly packed crowds\n\n\n\nFood and drink villages set discreetly within woodland clearings\n\n\n\nThe occasional pause where the forest itself becomes the backdrop between sets\n\n\n\nA sense of scale that is wide\, but never overwhelming\n\n\n\n\nThere is a natural rhythm to the evening here — one that follows the light\, the trees\, and the gradual transition into dusk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic in a living collection\n\n\n\nThe arboretum itself is central to the experience. Westonbirt is not just a venue; it is a globally significant tree collection\, home to thousands of labelled specimens from around the world. \n\n\n\nThat context adds a subtle layer to the concerts: performances take place not in a generic outdoor field\, but within a carefully curated landscape of botanical and historical importance. \n\n\n\nIt’s a setting where conservation\, culture\, and entertainment overlap without competing for attention. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Westonbirt stands out\n\n\n\nAmong all Forest Live locations\, Westonbirt is often remembered for its contrast — polished touring acts set against a landscape that feels ancient\, quiet\, and deliberately uncommercial. \n\n\n\nIt is a venue where scale is measured differently: not by size of crowd\, but by depth of atmosphere. \n\n\n\nFor many\, a Forest Live concert here becomes less about a single performance and more about the experience of being in the arboretum at night — when the trees\, light\, and music briefly share the same space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForestry England Westonbirt Arboretum 2026 line-up\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 24 June: Fatboy Slim (with Sally C + DJ Paulette)\n\n\n\nThursday 25 June: Deacon Blue (with Lightning Seeds + Shay O’Dowd)\n\n\n\nFriday 26 June: UB40 ft Ali Campbell (with Bitty McLean + Reggae Roast ft MC Horseman)\n\n\n\nSaturday 27 June: Rick Astley (with The Lottery Winners + Deco)\n\n\n\nSunday June 28 June: Richard Ashcroft (with Tom Meighan + Apollo Junction + DJ Wayne)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there\n\n\n\n\n\nBy car+\n\n\n\n\nAll Westonbirt Arboretum Forest Live car parks open at 4:30pm (except on Thursday and Friday evenings when they open at 6:00pm). \n\n\n\nParking costs £11 per car in advance. If you plan on arriving by car\, a parking space must be booked in advance\, alongside admission tickets. Book a parking space with Ticketmaster. \n\n\n\nAccessible Blue Badge Parking can be booked online (same charges apply).  \n\n\n\nSubject to availability\, limited parking may be available on the day at a cost of £20\, payable on arrival (card payments only).  \n\n\n\nThose attending concerts from the north and north east (such as from the M5 J13\, Stroud\, Cirencester and Gloucester) will be parked in Westonbirt School grounds postcode GL8 8QG opposite the arboretum with a controlled pedestrian crossing and an approximate 1 mile walk to the arena along the level and well surfaced Mitchell Drive\, through the heart of the beautiful Arboretum. This is to allow better traffic flow\, particularly when you leave the site once the concert has ended. \n\n\n\nCustomers with additional access needs should see venue access information \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy coach+\n\n\n\n\nTravel in a greener way with our return coach service to Forest Live at Westonbirt Arboretum. Advance booking is essential. See ticket link above. \n\n\n\nPick up points TBA \n\n\n\nAfter the concert\, you are required to be at the pick-up point within 30 mins of the concert ending. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy public transport+\n\n\n\n\nThe nearest train station is at Kemble (Swindon to Gloucester line)\, 12 miles away. \n\n\n\nOnly pre-booked taxis will be allowed on site\, we do not have a taxi rank of cars waiting for passengers. Make sure you’ve considered your return journey before arriving and book in advance. \n\n\n\nPlease use the designated pick up point to meet with your taxi or lift home. Do not arrange to meet them on the main road. This is dangerous due to high speed traffic at night and would have an adverse impact on our neighbours. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nTo book a personal assistant ticket\, or viewing platform or accessible grass viewing area places\, request an approved account in advance \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery

SUMMARY:Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n“It doesn’t matter which way you go\,” said the Cat. ” – so long as I get somewhere\,” Alice added … “Oh\, you’re sure to do that … if you only walk long enough.” \n\n\n\nOn this 90-minute circular walking tour of the beautiful Christ Church Meadow\, you will encounter the real people\, places and events behind the creation of the much-loved stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking-Glass. \n\n\n\nThe tour this year is especially pertinent in marking 150 years since the publication of Lewis Carroll’s epic nonsense poem\, The Hunting of the Snark. \n\n\n\nThe route will follow waterside paths in Oxford that were familiar to the ‘real’ Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell)\, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church\, and to author Lewis Carroll\, who was a lifelong resident of the college. Mark Davies\, Oxford local historian\, author and trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, will reveal the history behind the novels as your expert tour guide. \n\n\n\nStopping at significant locations along the riverside\, you will learn about the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the Alice books. With reference to striking historical and geographic landmarks and features\, as well as other classics of fantasy literature\, the people\, places and events which inspired the books will be revealed to you. \n\n\n\nJoin a Real Alice in Wonderland Tour to see fiction\, fantasy and history come to life through the eyes of a local expert in Oxford’s history. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Christ Church; many locations along the River Thames\, the Cherwell and the Trill Mill Stream which inspired the creation of the stories\, including the departure point of the fateful boat trips on which the story was first told and the house of a hatter (likely The Hatter!). Additionally\, you will see Alice’s ‘Wool and Water’ Shop and have views into Oxford University Botanic Garden\, the inspiration for some other famous works of fantasy fiction. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this tour does not include entry to the buildings of Christ Church. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front of house team. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts for approximately. 90 minutes and is a circular walk around central Oxford. Length: approx. 1.2 miles / 1.9 km. Two toilet stops are available along the way. \n\n\n\nPlease note the Tudor Painted Room is up a steep flight of stairs without a lift; it is sadly not accessible to wheelchairs. The rest of the tour can be adapted to offer a more wheelchair-friendly route\, avoiding narrow doorways and cobbles (please let it be known if you would prefer this option by emailing museum@oxford.gov.uk). \n\n\n\nPlease note that this walk is recommended for ages 16+. \n\n\n\nYour ticket also gives you access to the MOX galleries on the day of the walk\, at any time during opening hours. \n\n\n\nMeet Your Tour Guide: Mark Davies \n\n\n\nMark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, public speaker\, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!); historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder); a biography of the Oxford pastry cook who was the first Englishman to fly (King of all Balloons); and the insightful A Jericho Scrapbook and Jericho – a Celebration. \n\n\n\nUntil 2020 he had lived on an Oxford residential narrowboat for nearly 30 years\, and is the Chair of the Jericho (Oxford) Living Heritage Trust. He is also a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, a member of the Society of Authors\, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. Well\, step right up\, because The Jive Aces are bringing their Feelin’ Happy Tour to town\, and it’s gonna flip your frown upside down! \n\n\n\nWhen these cats burst onto the stage in their signature yellow suits\, you’ll be tapping your feet and grinning like a fool before you know it. This ain’t just a show\, it’s a proper good time that’ll leave you buzzing with joy. \n\n\n\nFor 30 years\, they’ve been taking their infectious tunes to over 40 countries and continuously proving why they are the UK’s No.1 jive and swing band. They effortlessly transition from smooth-as-butter ballads to rip-roaring rhythm & blues\, with a nod to the raw\, foot-stomping roots of rock ‘n’roll. \n\n\n\nThey’ve played for the Queen\, packed out the Royal Albert Hall\, and made history as the first band to get to the Britain’s Got Talent finals. With 250 gigs a year\, they’ve got a knack for turning any crowd into a dancing\, cheering frenzy. \n\n\n\nYou’ve probably caught their rendition of the Morecambe and Wise classic Bring Me Sunshine – a banger with nearly 4 million YouTube views that’s so upbeat a U.S. doctor prescribed it to chase away the blues. \n\n\n\nIt’s been all over Strictly Come Dancing\, Netflix\, an American cop show and recently comedian Miranda Hart even declared it one of her favourite songs and stated on BBC Radio 3\, “The Jive Aces will get me up off the floor and make me lose any self-consciousness and dance!” \n\n\n\nTheir latest album\, Keeping The Show On The Road\, is stuffed with crowd favourites that hit No.1 on Mike Read’s Heritage Chart and got spins on BBC and Boom Radio. Those tracks\, plus their classic hits\, will have you moving from the first note. \n\n\n\nJoining the party is the sensational Noelle Vaughn\, a jazz siren who’s got the UK scene buzzing. With a voice like velvet and a stage presence that’ll stop you in your tracks\, Noelle swings from sultry ballads to red-hot jazz standards with ladles of charm. She’s wowed crowds at Ronnie Scott’s and lit up Eamonn Holmes’ 60th birthday bash. \n\n\n\nFresh off her acclaimed albums Bewitched and Too Darn Hot\, with originals co-written with Amy Winehouse’s guitarist\, Noelleâ’s smooth style channels Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan but with a spark that’s all her own. \n\n\n\nThese guys and gals are the real deal. They’ve shared stages with legends like Van Morrison\, John Travolta\, and Priscilla Presley\, Jamie Cullum\, Toto and Status Quo\, and nabbed awards like the City of Derry International Music Award and the Variety Club of Great Britain Award for their music and charity work. \n\n\n\nTheir music videos? SUMMARY:Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days
DESCRIPTION:Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days\n\n\n\nTravel back in time to the golden age of the Great Western Railway and savour the sights\, sounds and smells of steam as you explore this 21-acre living museum with trains dating from Victorian times to the 1960s. \n\n\n\nSteam trains will operate on at least one of the centre’s two demonstration lines\, allowing you to take unlimited rides. On many days\, the second line will be running too and may feature a pioneering diesel railcar\, a heritage diesel locomotive or a small branchline steam engine. Check the Locomotive Roster to see what will be running on the date of your visit. \n\n\n\n\nStroll around the 1932 Engine Shed housing our unique collection of operational and cosmetically-restored locomotives. Find 5900 Hinderton Hall\, climb onto the footplate and listen to Archie\, the driver\, and Stan\, the fireman\, prepare their loco! Listen out for the sounds of a working engine shed and see if you can hear Stan fetch his supplies from Jonah\, the storeman.\n\n\n\nVisit the carriage and wagon display of restored rolling stock from Victorian times to the 1940s\, including the VIP Saloon reputed to have been used by General Eisenhower during the preparations for D-Day and later used in the GWR Royal Train\, and our restoration workshops\n\n\n\nMarvel at Brunel’s Broad Gauge railway\, locomotives\, coaches and transfer shed and don’t miss a section of his not entirely successful ‘Atmospheric Railway’\n\n\n\nGet hands-on in The Signalling Centre where you can find out how trains have been controlled through the ages.  The Swindon Panel is demonstrated on certain specified dates.\n\n\n\nDescend into a shelter built to keep Didcot’s enginemen safe in WWII and experience an air raid\n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in the huge and varied collection of fascinating\, smaller items in the Museum. \n\n\n\nDiscover some GWR road vehicles in the Road Transport Hangar.\n\n\n\n\nChildren can also make tracks to the outdoor play area or dress up as a station master. You can relax over lunch or enjoy a snack in the refreshment rooms\, and don’t forget to pick up a souvenir in the gift shop. The modern trains running past the centre complete the picture and mean you can experience over 180 years of railway progress in just one day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nAdmission for 2 people with Tea & Cake – £48.00 (£53.00 with Gift Aid) \n\n\n\nAdult Admission – £18.50 (£20.50 with Gift Aid)Senior Admission (65+) – £16.50 (£19.00 with Gift Aid)Child Admission (3 to 15) – £11.00 (£13.00 with Gift Aid)                  Child Under 3 Admission – Free \n\n\n\nFamily of 4 Admission (2 Adults and 2 Children) – £55.00 (£61.00 with Gift Aid)Family of 5 Admission (2 Adults and 3 Children) – £65.00 (£72.00 with Gift Aid)                  Carer Admission – £0.00Visitors may be asked to provide reasonable proof of carer status on the day of arrival. \n\n\n\nAdmission prices are inclusive of all regular attractions including free train rides on running days. \n\n\n\nChild prices apply to children aged 3 to 15 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\n\nDidcot Railway Centre will be open at 10.30am\, with the last entries at 2.30pm.\n\n\n\nYou are welcome to stay until close at 4.00pm.\n\n\n\nPlease have your original e-ticket ready to show the staff. \n\n\n\nPlease also bring your membership card if you’re a member or your carer’s ID if you have booked a carer’s ticket.\n\n\n\nOn arrival at Didcot Parkway Station\, please show your ticket to GWR staff\, who will let you through the barrier.
