SUMMARY:Museum of Oxford Walks: Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure & Entertainment
DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure & Entertainment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure & Entertainment\n\n\n\nDiscover a different side of Oxford’s urban history on a walking tour through Oxford’s Victorian past. Led by local historian Liz Woolley. \n\n\n\nExplore the Oxford of the Victorian age and find out what Victorian Oxford did for fun on this unique 90-minute circular walking tour visiting the sites of historic entertainment venues in the city centre.  \n\n\n\nLed by local historian Liz Woolley\, this city walking tour will introduce you to a different side of Oxford’s urban history. See the ‘city of dreaming spires’ from the perspective of ordinary townspeople\, who found themselves with leisure time – and the money to spend on it – for the first time.  \n\n\n\nYou will learn about both the rash and the rational sides of Victorian entertainment\, visiting sites including the Pembroke Street Public Baths\, where you could be attended by a “first-class shampooer and teacher of swimming”\, and the YMCA on George Street which promised to guide young men away from the “temptations of city life”.  \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Town Hall and Public Library\, the Wilberforce Temperance Hotel (where alcohol was banned)\, The Jolly Farmers Pub\, and the New Theatre – plus more historic Oxford locations!  \n\n\n\nJoin our Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure and Entertainment Walk to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover a different side to this famous city’s history.  \n\n\n\nPlease note that this tour was previously run under the name ‘Leisure and Entertainment in Victorian and Edwardian Oxford’.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front-of-house team.  \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 1.5 hours.   \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces\, and narrow pavements. One of the stops involves going through Whatsheaf Yard which is very narrow and has an uneven surface. An alternative route to the next stop is available through St Aldate’s. Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. Accessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. \n\n\n\nPlease contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. SUMMARY:Marquee Square Heroes: 40 years of Marillion's Misplaced Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Marquee Square Heroes: 40 years of Marillion’s Misplaced Childhood\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Marquee Square Heroes: 40 years of Marillion’s Misplaced Childhood\n\n\n\n‘Do you remember chalk hearts melting on a wall’. Marquee Square Heroes invites you to relive the shows that made Marillion one of the biggest bands in the world. \n\n\n\nBy the end of 1984 Marillion had completed their second album release and toured the UK\, Europe\, and North America to great acclaim with the Fugazi album. Demand to see the band was huge and a multitude of pirated bootleg live albums were beginning to circulate amongst their fans. EMI decided to release a live ‘mini album’\, available at a reduced price. And thus\, was born Real to Reel\, a live album that really captures the essence and spirit of the band at that time. \n\n\n\nOn reflection\, this smart\, knee-jerk decision\, enabled the band to concentrate on writing the album that became the biggest-selling album of their career Misplaced Childhood. Achieved Number 1 status in the album charts\, providing massive exposure with top 3 chart singles positions for Kayleigh and Lavender\, and a healthy chart position for Heart of Lothian too. \n\n\n\nMarquee Square Heroes: 40 years of Marillion’s Misplaced Childhood\n\n\n\nKayleigh was only kept from the top of the charts by a worthy charity single but sold well over 200\,000 copies. You couldn’t turn the Radio on in 1985 and not hear that classic song of lost love and lost opportunities. And I seriously suspect everyone knows at least one Kayleigh! \n\n\n\nThis year\, Marquee Square Heroes will recreate the shows from this key period for Marillion\, performing not only a set that reflects that tour but also performing the entire classic Misplaced Childhood album\, as intended by the band in strict running order. As well as other classics\, not necessarily performed on that tour. \n\n\n\nA show in Marillion’s hometown\, Aylesbury\, on the 40th anniversary of the album release will be a very special event and Marquee Square Heroes are delighted to celebrate this milestone in a truly significant manner\, befitting the occasion. The event will feature the cream of local talent\, including renowned musicians from the genre who have performed worldwide alongside members of Marillion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £22.00 \n\n\n\nNo transaction fees \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 26 July 2025 at 8.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nNorman Bragg Studio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Aylesbury Waterside Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nAylesbury Waterside Theatre is a stunning modern venue at the heart of Buckinghamshire’s cultural scene. \n\n\n\nOpened in 2010\, its striking wooden interior takes inspiration from the rolling Chiltern Hills\, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
