SUMMARY:The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican: The Winter Woollies Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican: The Winter Woollies Tour \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican: The Winter Woollies Tour\n\n\n\nFounded in Barnsley Rock City in 2006 by their outspoken and energetic ringleader\, Scott Doonican\, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are on a mission! \n\n\n\nFar from being your typical folk ensemble\, this cult-like collective of like-minded knit-wear enthusiasts are determined to follow in their spiritual father’s immortal footsteps and keep his legacy alive. \n\n\n\nScott and his brothers-from-other-mothers\, Alan\, J.R.\, and Mo-Jo\, have quite the talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new satirical comedy lyrics\, on folk instruments\, and to complete their outrageously understated image\, the Doonicans have become instantly recognisable for their immaculate hair and their stylish choice of sexy knitwear\, and instantly memorable for their lairy\, no-holds-barred\, anarchic live shows. \n\n\n\nA group that is both perpetually on the move\, ever-evolving\, and joyously independent\, they have played close to 1300 side-splitting shows to date\, and have brought smiles and belly laughs to audiences across the UK; from Barnsley to Barnstaple\, from Glastonbury to Glasgow. \n\n\n\nThey continue to wow audiences with a fine selection of their greatest hits\, including the likes of ‘Jump Ararnd\,’ ‘The Lady In Greggs\,’ ‘How Deep Is Your Glove?’ ‘Paint ’em Back\,’ ‘Goat Yoga\,’ and ‘If I Could Punch A Face… It’d Be Justin Bieber’s.’ \n\n\n\nThey have written and recorded eleven studio albums\, independently released over 40 live recordings\, successfully crowd-funded nine separate independent vinyl releases\, played on top of mountains\, wowed-festival goers across the length and breadth of the UK\, had six different beers brewed and named in their honour by four different breweries (one of which\, ‘Doonicans’ is an award winning part of the brewery’s core range of ales). \n\n\n\nThey have sold outaward-winnin six consecutive shows on a Mississippi paddle-steamer on the Norfolk Broads in less than 20 seconds\, hosted their own sell-out music and comedy festivals\, written & performed in their musical\, are featured in the Experience Barnsley Museum Music Archives\, hold the bar-takings record for at least ten theatres\, and have been the recipients of six different individual awards as voted for by the public in the Barnsley Music Awards. \n\n\n\nThey played the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival\, and to 20\,000 people at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention (twice!). They even scaled the dizzy heights of a #1 and a #2 single and a #2 album on the iTunes Comedy Charts (plus a National chart position in the Top 100)! That’s not too shabby for a daft little unsigned comedy folk band from Barnsley\, who manage themselves\, eh? \n\n\n\nThe Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican can’t wait to bring their shindig (and their new line-up) to the Mill Arts Centre\, and they promise they will rock you… but gently! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“The greatest thing to come out of Barnsley\, since the A61 to Sheffield.” \n\n\n\nJarvis Cocker\, Pulp \n\n\n\n\n\n“Always enjoy the boys from The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. When the North goes independent I am suggesting ‘ Too Good To Be Jus’ is our national anthem. Great fun.” \n\n\n\nJason Manford\, comedian \n\n\n\n\n\n“The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are very\, very funny… parodists extraordinaire. One of the hardest working and best live acts on the planet. Bringing light to dark corners and joy to babes and toothless mumblers alike. Lovely stuff.” \n\n\n\nMike Harding\, comedian\, folk musician\, author & broadcaster \n\n\n\n\n\n“An act that you will wanna go and see over and over again. Absolutely hilarious.” \n\n\n\nDave Pegg\, Fairport Convention \n\n\n\n\n\n”The 8th wonder of the world is actually in Yorkshire… a wonderful Yorkshire genius collective known as The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. To see them is to know true magnificence.” \n\n\n\nKate Rusby\, Multi-Award Winning Folk-Musician. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices:From £23.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times:Saturday 11 October 2025 at 8.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mill Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre is the cultural hub for Banbury and the surrounding area. \n\n\n\nAs the only dedicated arts provision in the area\, it aims to inspire creativity and enrich the lives of the communities by providing a high-quality\, varied artistic\, educational and participatory programme. \n\n\n\nIt plays a significant role in the town’s cultural\, social and economic development by offering the community the chance to engage with and be entertained by several art forms. \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre offers an exciting live events programme\, including theatre\, dance\, music\, comedy\, film\, workshops and classes. SUMMARY:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield
DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. It previews Summerfield’s working process and serves as a forerunner to the full exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n Free admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 11 October to Sunday 30 November 2025  \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBlackwell Hall\, Weston Library

SUMMARY:That Knave\, Raleigh
DESCRIPTION:That Knave\, Raleigh\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout That Knave\, Raleigh\n\n\n\nFollowing their five-star show\, I\, Elizabeth\, the award-winning Dyad Productions (A Christmas Carol\, Lady Susan\, A Room of One’s Own\, Christmas Gothic\, Austen’s Women\, Female Gothic) return to the Elizabethan era. To the famous and fabulous Elizabethan explorer\, sailor\, dandy\, and warrior\, Sir Walter Raleigh. Elizabeth I’s favourite and James I’s knave. \n\n\n\nThis is a journey through the astonishing highs and lows of one of Britain’s most famous historical figures. But there’s so much you don’t know… \n\n\n\nFather\, husband\, writer\, poet\, adventurer\, philosopher\, soldier\, tyrant\, egotist\, lover\, traitor\, alchemist\, visionary\, victim. \n\n\n\nIn a life spanning around 65 years\, Sir Walter Raleigh achieved more than others might do in a hundred lifetimes. Over a decade in the tower and still he held power. The Huguenots\, America\, The Armada\, and execution. Is that the whole story? The final chapter of Raleigh’s life is perhaps the most daring\, strange\, and utterly heartbreaking. \n\n\n\nSee the fall from grace taken directly from the historical record\, marvel at the magnetism of a man who seized every opportunity to create a legacy which spans the centuries\, and at every wrenching\, exalting\, and personal moment\, you will be witnesses. \n\n\n\nWritten and performed by Andrew Margerison (A Christmas Carol\, Frantic Assembly’s Fatherland\, Macbeth)\, and directed by Rebecca Vaughan (A Christmas Carol). \n\n\n\nCreated in collaboration with The Old Town Hall\, Hemel Hempstead. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.themillartscentre.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/that_knave_raleigh_trailer-1080p.mp4?_=1\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“If you haven’t seen Dyad Productions’ work before\, you simply must.”  \n\n\n\nBritish Theatre Guide \n\n\n\n\n\nTHREE WEEKS Cumulative Body of Work Award-Winners\, 2018 \n\n\n\n\n\n“Beautifully performed… entrancing.” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nBritish Theatre Guide \n\n\n\n\n\n“Richly re-imagined\, exquisitely evocative.” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nEdinburgh Guide \n\n\n\n\n\n“A towering performance…assured…rich.” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nThe Scotsman \n\n\n\n\n\n“Outstanding… gripping… never less than magnetic.” ★★★★★  \n\n\n\nThree Weeks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £18.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 09 October 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mill Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre is the cultural hub for Banbury and the surrounding area.
