SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: A Viennese New Year
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: A Viennese New Year\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: A Viennese New Year\n\n\n\nStrauss II Overture to Die Fledermaus \n\n\n\nGlazunov Violin Concerto in A minor\, Op. 82 \n\n\n\nStrauss II Tritsch-Tratsch Polka \n\n\n\nStrauss II Kaiser Waltz \n\n\n\nStrauss II Unter Donner und Blitz \n\n\n\nStrauss II Frühlingsstimmen – Voices of Spring \n\n\n\nStrauss II Pizzicato Polka \n\n\n\nStrauss II The Blue Danube \n\n\n\nStrauss I Radetsky March \n\n\n\nPaloma So violin \n\n\n\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \n\n\n\nGlazunov’s Violin Concerto is one of the best-kept secrets of the romantic repertoire\, a score whose sensuous\, rhapsodic solo line weaves sweetness and melancholia. \n\n\n\nThe sensational prodigy Paloma So plays it here\, but for the rest of this concert\, prepare to party like it’s 1899 as the Oxford Philharmonic masquerades as its Vienna counterpart to bring in the New Year with the stirring marches\, pointed polkas and elegant waltzes of Austrian tradition. \n\n\n\nMarios Papadopoulos takes charge of music\, bounding with joie de vivre that’s also all about detail and style. There’s no better way to drive away the January blues than to be swept away by some of the most embracing music ever written. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £15.00 \n\n\n\nStudents from £5.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 04 January 2026 at 4.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n120 minutes

The first part prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ\, the second exalted his sacrifice for humankind\, and the final section heralded his Resurrection. \n\n\n\nMessiah’s success in Dublin was soon quickly repeated in London when it was performed for the first time in London a year later at the Covent Garden Theatre. It took time for Messiah to find its niche as a Christmas favourite\, but now\, of course\, Handel’s Messiah is a fixture of the Christmas season. \n\n\n\nHandel composed Messiah in an astounding interlude – between three and four weeks in August and September 1741. Whilst some think it was divine inspiration\, he was actually just really good at writing quickly. He composed operas of a similar length during the short times between theatrical seasons. \n\n\n\nThe original version of Messiah is lost\, as Handel edited and re-worked the music in the years following the premiere. And to create work for as many players as possible extra parts were written for more instruments. \n\n\n\nPS: The tradition of standing for the Hallelujah chorus was begun by King George II at the London premiere – and when the King stands\, so does everybody else.

He united them in song. \n\n\n\nA Yorkshire village’s choral society finds its ranks depleted as men head off to war.
