SUMMARY:Ulster American
DESCRIPTION:Ulster American \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ulster American \n\n\n\nBy David IrelandYou’re not supposed to be here… \n\n\n\nJay Conway\, Oscar-winner\, in the cosy London flat of Leigh Carver\, acclaimed director. Two of the arts’ most powerful men. \n\n\n\nThey are waiting for Ruth Davenport\, the “Irish writer” whose play they begin rehearsals for the next morning. \n\n\n\n“Would you mind if I asked you a troubling question?” \n\n\n\nJay and Leigh are aware they are unobserved – their conversation spans racism\, rape\, Alcoholics Anonymous… \n\n\n\nThen Ruth enters. She is not what the men had expected. Secrets come out. True colours begin to show. There will be blood. \n\n\n\nUlster American is a play that has run successfully at Fringe\, West End and Broadway – not without dividing audiences to the point of walk-outs. David Ireland’s black satire will make you laugh\, gasp\, question why you’re laughing\, and laugh some more. \n\n\n\nThis is a conversation you were never supposed to hear. SUMMARY:Summer Concert May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\nGioachino Rossini\, world-famous at 21\, admired by Beethoven and Schubert\, and the greatest writer of comic opera\, more or less gave up composing at 37. (Health\, wealth\, several houses and a new mistress?) \n\n\n\nHowever\, at the age of 71\, he composed the Petite Messe Solennelle\, one of the most intriguing works of the 19th century. \n\n\n\nNeither short nor solemn\, the title is either a joke or refers to the small forces he had in mind: 12 singers (including castrati)\, two pianos and a harmonium. Behind the shimmering tunefulness is music of great majesty\, rigour\, depth and hushed solemnity. \n\n\n\nToo long for a church service\, it was first performed in a Parisian salon. Quirkily\, it quotes a composer friend writing in the style of Palestrina in the opening Kyrie and has an extended piano solo as the Offertorium. \n\n\n\nAbove all\, Rossini’s mature genius for melody and musical architecture is dazzling throughout. \n\n\n\nWith four superb soloists\, a harmonium and the inclusion of a performance of Rossini’s ‘Première communion’ from ‘Péchés de vieillesse’ (‘Sins of Old Age’) by dazzling pianist Julian Littlewood\, you are guaranteed a wonderful and memorable spring evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £20.00 \n\n\n\nA fee of £1.50 per transaction applies to bookings for this event across all channels – website\, phone and in-person bookings at the Box Office. The fee is waived for Oxford Playhouse members. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours 15 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPlease note that photography\, recording or filming is not permitted during this event.

SUMMARY:The Unthanks
DESCRIPTION:The Unthanks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Unthanks\n\n\n\nHow many artists have journeyed through as much musical ground as The Unthanks over the past two decades? \n\n\n\nBBC 6 Music regulars\, but equally to be found on Radios 2\, 3 and 4\, the Tyneside band are like magpies\, picking up undiscovered jewels\, reframing history and drawing on the worlds of folk\, jazz\, orchestral\, electronica and art-rock to create their own unique truth and beauty. \n\n\n\nThey have won Mojo Magazine Folk Album of the Year twice\, they were the only British folk representation in The Guardian’s and Uncut’s Best Albums of the Decade (worldwide\, all genres)\, and count amongst their admirers fellow storytellers including Elvis Costello\, Maxine Peake\, Michael Sheen\, Rosanne Cash\, Martin Freeman\, Robert Wyatt\, Martin Hayes\, Nick Hornby\, Ben Myers and Dawn French. \n\n\n\nUsing the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point\, the influence of Miles Davis\, Steve Reich\, Sufjan Stevens\, Robert Wyatt\, Antony & The Johnsons\, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s 16 records to date\, earning them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and international acclaim along the way. \n\n\n\nThe Unthanks are constantly evolving. They have scaled up for orchestral and brass band shows\, drawing on the arranging and composing skills of self-taught band leader Adrian McNally\, and paired right back for the unaccompanied live record Diversions Vol 5\, drawing on the traditional singing backgrounds of Rachel and Becky Unthank and Niopha Keegan. \n\n\n\nThey’ve created song cycles from Emily Brontë’s poetry\, site-specific theatre with Maxine Peake\, soundtracks for Mackenzie Crook’s Worzel Gummidge\, had music used on HBO’s True Detective\, Peaky Blinders\, Vera\, and The Detectorists\, and a string of ‘Diversions’ interpreting the work of Molly Drake\, Anohni and Robert Wyatt. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Few of their contemporaries\, within both folk music and the wider artistic spectrum\, have such a keenly-honed ability to locate in a song the emotional essence that can\, in just a single phrase or vocal elision\, cut one to the quick.” \n\n\n\nThe Independent \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£32.00 \n\n\n\nAll prices include any booking fees \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour 50 minutes \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nThe Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Theatre Chipping Norton\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Theatre Chipping Norton\, sometimes called The Theatre\, Chipping Norton or Chipping Norton Theatre\, is a theatre\, an arthouse cinema\, a gallery and a concert hall in Chipping Norton. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has has 217 seats\, including stalls and a balcony. It is a resource for the community\, and it is also a professional venue\, welcoming over 55\,000 customer visits every year. \n\n\n\nIt is something unique\, but it is also different things to different people. It is the cause and subject of many arguments and debates; and a fair amount of acclaim and affection. It is complicated and a little eccentric. \n\n\n\nIt is not a little theatre. Situated on Holywell Street\, close to the heart of the University of Oxford\, it was constructed in 1748 and is celebrated for its remarkable acoustics and intimate atmosphere. \n\n\n\nOften considered the first dedicated music venue in England\, the Holywell Music Room has hosted performances for over two centuries. It has historical ties to esteemed composers like Haydn and has been a key location for classical music in the region. The building’s interior reflects the elegance of Georgian architecture\, with a design that prioritises sound quality. Seating around 200 people\, it provides an immersive and personal concert experience. \n\n\n\nThe venue remains an active hub for musical performances\, regularly showcasing chamber music\, solo recitals\, and other classical events. It is used extensively by the University of Oxford and local cultural organisations. Conveniently located in central Oxford\, the Holywell Music Room continues to attract music lovers and visitors who appreciate its historical and artistic significance. \n\n\n\nVisit the venue information page for further details.

SUMMARY:The General Strike in Oxford
DESCRIPTION:The General Strike in Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The General Strike in Oxford\n\n\n\n2026 marks 100 years since the General Strike. The only General Strike in UK history\, it saw three million workers walk out between 04 to 12 May 1926. \n\n\n\nAmong these millions were workers in Oxford: railway\, print and building workers. They walked out in solidarity with miners facing a wage cut and a longer working day. Their actions brought areas of the city to a standstill. \n\n\n\nIn 1984-85\, thousands of miners went on strike over proposed pit closures. The year-long strike was sustained in part by solidarity efforts across the country. In Oxford\, despite geographical distance from the coalmining heartlands\, collective efforts generated extraordinary support for striking miners. \n\n\n\nThrough two performances based on historical accounts\, these two episodes in Oxford’s history – and the links between them – will be brought to light. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature live music from the Sea Green Singers and a paid bar. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\n1.45pm – Doors open \n\n\n\n2.00pm – The General Strike in Oxford\, by Peter Cann \n\n\n\nBased on written and oral histories\, records of the Oxford & District Trades Council\, and newspaper archives\, this performance will draw on the experiences of those in Oxford who took part in the 1926 General Strike. \n\n\n\nThe performance will be presented by a group of narrators and performers\, who will give voice to the sequence of events and the people involved over the nine days of the Strike. The performance will be accompanied by songs performed by the Sea Green Singers. Written and devised by local playwright Peter Cann. \n\n\n\n3.00pm – Interval \n\n\n\n3.20pm – 40th Anniversary of the Miners’ Strike in Oxford \n\n\n\nBased on the book ‘The Miners’ Strike in Oxford’\, this portion of the event will tell the story of the extraordinary efforts made in the city to support the miners\, including significant campaigning\, picketing and fundraising. \n\n\n\nFeaturing singing from the Sea Green Singers. This is a reprisal of an event first held at Florence Park Community Centre in 2025 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike. \n\n\n\n4.00pm – Event ends \n\n\n\nThis event is held to commemorate the centenary of the General Strike\, alongside further events organised by Oxford & District Trades Council. \n\n\n\nAccess  \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nTickets cost £8.50 and can be booked online or at the Museum Shop. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 at 2.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nEvent tickets are non-refundable if you choose to cancel your booking. A refund will only be issued if the event is cancelled or if there is a significant change to the advertised programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of Oxford and its people. Located inside the Oxford Town Hall\, it explores the city’s rich history beyond the university\, focusing on the lives\, industries\, and communities that have shaped Oxford over time. \n\n\n\nThe museum features interactive exhibits\, local artefacts\, and personal stories\, covering topics such as Oxford’s medieval origins\, its diverse communities\, and key moments in its development. Buying at farmers’ markets helps to support local farmers and producers. There are no middlemen involved\, and no profits for supermarkets and their shareholders. \n\n\n\nCome to Abingdon and enjoy its friendly atmosphere and unique setting. Sample and savour the fresh produce of our local district. Meet local farmers\, growers and producers. \n\n\n\nThe market moved to Market Place in November 2008 and takes place on the third Friday of every month from 8.30am to 1.30pm. \n\n\n\nAbingdon Farmers’ Market
