SUMMARY:Wonder of Birds Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\nA major new exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries invites visitors to step into the remarkable world of birds\, exploring their beauty\, symbolism and fragility through art\, literature and science. \n\n\n\nWonder of Birds draws inspiration from The Book of Birds\, created by artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. Global perspectives include imagery from The Book of the Fixed Stars and the poetic journey of The Conference of the Birds. \n\n\n\nEnhancing the experience\, a specially commissioned soundscape by sound artist Jason Singh immerses visitors in birdsong and natural environments\, while artist duo Daniel & Clara present an interactive ‘Rewilding Imagination field guide’. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Wonder of Birds poster\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 02 May 2026 to Sunday 03 January 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nThe Treasury\, Weston Library

SUMMARY:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future
DESCRIPTION:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\n34: The Critical Raw Materials Shaping Our Future is a major new exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History explores the hidden materials that power modern life — from smartphones and batteries to medical equipment and jet engines. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines the 34 raw materials considered essential to the UK’s future\, revealing the global supply chains\, ethical challenges and scientific innovations behind the minerals that underpin everyday technology. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford’s Oxford EARTH Programme and departments across the physical\, life and social sciences\, the exhibition explores how increasing demand for green energy and digital technology is transforming the global race for critical materials. \n\n\n\nVisitors can discover why substances such as lithium\, cobalt and rare earth elements are so important to modern society\, why supply chains are becoming increasingly fragile\, and how scientists and industry are searching for more sustainable and ethical ways to source\, use and recycle these materials. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive displays\, scientific research\, historic objects and contemporary technologies\, the exhibition examines the future of extraction\, sustainability and resource security\, while highlighting the environmental and geopolitical challenges linked to critical raw materials. \n\n\n\nDesigned for audiences of all ages\, the exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks\, workshops\, tours and family activities exploring the science\, ethics and global impact of the materials shaping our future. \n\n\n\nWhat are critical raw materials?\n\n\n\nCritical raw materials are those essential to key technologies but their supply may be limited\, unsustainable or unethical. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. The UK government includes 34 raw materials on its designated critical list\, but lists vary from country to country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\naluminium\n\n\n\nantimony\n\n\n\nbismuth\n\n\n\nborates\n\n\n\ncobalt\n\n\n\ngallium\n\n\n\ngermanium\n\n\n\nhafnium\n\n\n\nhelium\n\n\n\nindium\n\n\n\niridium\n\n\n\niron\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nlithium\n\n\n\nmagnesite\n\n\n\nmagnesium\n\n\n\nmanganese\n\n\n\nnatural graphite\n\n\n\nnickel\n\n\n\nniobium\n\n\n\nphosphorus\n\n\n\nplatinum\n\n\n\nrare earth elements (REEs)\n\n\n\nrhenium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nrhodium\n\n\n\nruthenium\n\n\n\nsilicon\n\n\n\nsodium\n\n\n\ntantalum\n\n\n\ntellurium\n\n\n\ntin\n\n\n\ntitanium\n\n\n\ntungsten\n\n\n\nvanadium\n\n\n\nzinc\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\n\nEntry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\nBooking is required for organisations/groups of more than ten people visiting on the same day.\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: \n\n\n\n\nMonday to Sunday from 10.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nLast entry at 4.45pm\n\n\n\nClosed on 24\, 25\, & 26 December\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nPlease contact the friendly team at the museum by telephone (01865 272 950) or email (foh@oum.ox.ac.uk) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\nClick images to expand \n\n\n\n\nBattery Ores\n\n\n\nBismuth\n\n\n\nCobalt\n\n\n\nDysprosium\n\n\n\nHalite\n\n\n\nREEs\n\n\n\n\nImage credit: Sarah Bell

SUMMARY:When the Blackbird Sings
DESCRIPTION:When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\nAn immersive\, eye-opening\, heart-stirring journey through time. \n\n\n\nDirected by Erica Whyman and written by Natty Mark Samuels\, Helen Eastman\, and Afsaneh Gray. \n\n\n\nThis is the story of Paulette\, who was born in Jamaica\, crossed an ocean to expand her horizons and now\, in 1966\, she is determined to change the world. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \n\n\n\nJoin ‘When the Blackbird Sings’ in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive. \n\n\n\nYou will be invited to hop aboard a bus to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand. \n\n\n\nThe journey will end at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n\n\n\nBefore You Arrive \n\n\n\nThis is a promenade production\, meaning the performance takes place across several locations in Oxford. Audience members will travel between locations primarily by bus\, with one short walking section of approximately 0.75 kilometres. \n\n\n\nThe performance begins in Blackbird Leys\, the starting venue is to be confirmed. Here tickets will be checked on arrival before the show begins. \n\n\n\nPlease avoid bringing large or heavy bags with you. The performance will last 2.5 hours and there will be some drinks and snacks incorporated. \n\n\n\nDuring the Performance \n\n\n\nOnce the show begins in Blackbird Leys\, audience members will board a bus which forms part of the performance itself. The route travels through Temple Cowley\, Cowley and into Oxford city centre. \n\n\n\nAll audience members will have a seat on the bus\, and headphones will be provided so you can hear the performers clearly throughout the journey. \n\n\n\nWhile everything possible will be done to keep the performance running to schedule\, there may occasionally be slight variations to timings due to traffic conditions on Oxford’s roads. \n\n\n\nThe bus will stop on Oxford High Street for a short walking section of the production. One of the locations visited during this section is a faith building (a church). After this\, audiences will reboard the bus for the final journey north along Woodstock Road to the Schwarzman Centre (OX2 6GG)\, where the performance concludes. \n\n\n\nAfter the Show \n\n\n\nAt the end of the performance\, you are welcome to leave directly from the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\nFor anyone who has parked a car or left a bicycle at the starting point\, there will also be the option to take the bus back to Blackbird Leys after the show. SUMMARY:The Paradise (Telugu)
DESCRIPTION:The Paradise (Telugu)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Paradise (Telugu)\n\n\n\nIn 1980s Secunderabad\, a marginalised tribe battles discrimination and fights for citizenship under an unexpected leader’s guidance\, challenging systemic oppression. \n\n\n\nThe Paradise is a Telugu-language action drama directed by Srikanth Odela\, the filmmaker behind Dasara. \n\n\n\nSet against the backdrop of Secunderabad\, the film follows a man caught in a violent struggle for survival as competing forces collide around him. \n\n\n\nNani leads the cast in a role that promises a departure from his more familiar romantic and dramatic performances\, with the story combining crime\, action and social tensions. \n\n\n\nProduced by Sudhakar Cherukuri\, the film brings together a large-scale production with Odela’s distinctive visual and storytelling style. \n\n\n\nWith its gritty setting\, intense action and ambitious scale\, The Paradise is positioned as one of Telugu cinema’s major upcoming releases\, offering a darker\, more hard-edged story centred on power\, conflict and survival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPlease check the cinema’s website for screening dates and times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\nRelease Date: 25 September 2026 \n\n\n\nDirector: Srikanth Odela\, Vinay Sagar Jonnala\, Hari. k. SUMMARY:Burning Down the House
DESCRIPTION:Burning Down the House\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Burning Down the House\n\n\n\nWho has the right to tell which stories? \n\n\n\nWhere’s the line between inspiration and exploitation? \n\n\n\nDoes any of that matter if the story’s good? \n\n\n\nScandinavia\, 1879. \n\n\n\nPlaywright Henrik Ibsen scandalises audiences with A Doll’s House\, whose heroine Nora walks out on her family. \n\n\n\nBut to one woman\, the story is all too familiar. Laura Kieler\, a young writer who had turned to Ibsen for help\, finds that he has stolen her harrowing circumstances as the play’s raw material. \n\n\n\nAs Ibsen’s literary fame ignites\, Laura’s life falls apart – she must fight to save her reputation and her relationship with her family. \n\n\n\nBurning Down the House takes a theatrical flamethrower to Ibsen’s text\, revealing Laura’s version of events – a darker story of a serious young writer and her emotionally abusive husband. \n\n\n\nThis new production by Breach\, the acclaimed company behind After the Act (Royal Court) and It’s True\, It’s True\, It’s True (BBC 4)\, has emerged from the research of leading Ibsen expert Kirsten Shepherd\, Professor of English and Theatre Studies at Oxford University. \n\n\n\nKirsten\, research assistant Tzen Sam\, and translator Gaye Kynoch have been uncovering and translating Laura’s articles\, letters and plays to assist Breach in creating this new production. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nStandard – £22.00 \n\n\n\nStudent – £10.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a booking fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 25 September to Saturday 10 October 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n80 minutes without an interval \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nTheatre \n\n\n\nAge guidance:  \n\n\n\n14+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nSchwarzman Centre for the Humanities is a major new cultural and academic landmark for the University of Oxford\, bringing together seven humanities faculties with performance\, exhibition\, and public engagement spaces under one roof. SUMMARY:A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy
DESCRIPTION:A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy\n\n\n\nA small enclosed room. A shark. What could possibly go wrong? \n\n\n\nWelcome to Alfie’s world. It’s funny\, a bit chaotic\, and doesn’t always behave how you expect. \n\n\n\nIn A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy\, reality\, fantasy and masking blur as Alfie shifts between versions of himself – rockstar\, guru\, actor\, shark. The question isn’t which one is real\, but why we feel the need to choose. \n\n\n\nRenowned autistic artists Cian Binchy (The Level\, ITV) and Anna Constable (EastEnders\, Imposter 22) bend the lines of fantasy and reality in a darkly comic universe. \n\n\n\nExpect shark chases\, cardboard cut-outs\, a rap about Devon\, and moments of surprising honesty. Every performance is relaxed and captioned\, creating a welcoming\, inclusive experience for all audiences. \n\n\n\nCreated by Cian Binchy in collaboration with Shaun Dunne and Leah Moore. Presented by Access All Areas.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Gleefully dismantles clichés about neurodiversity\, one bonkers scene at a time.” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nTheatre-News \n\n\n\n\n\n“Undeniably brilliant” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nNorth West End \n\n\n\n\n\n“A genuinely funny\, engaging and important piece of neurodivergent art.” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nA Young(ish) Perspective \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFull price – £14.00 \n\n\n\nConcessions (Student\, disability\, benefits\, under 16) – £12.00 \n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking fee of £1.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 30 September and Thursday 01 October 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBurton Taylor Studio \n\n\n\nAge guidance:  \n\n\n\n14+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry. \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse not only produces and tours its own theatrical productions\, but it also fosters creativity through its Artists in Residence program and the Playhouse Plays Out series\, which brings unique events to various locations across the county. \n\n\n\nThe theatre’s Participation Team engages over 15\,000 individuals annually\, offering an extensive range of activities\, including post-show discussions\, workshops\, work experience opportunities\, holiday programs\, a youth theatre\, and a company for young performers. \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse stands dedicated to its mission of being a Playhouse for all\, striving to ignite inspiration and bring about transformative experiences through its commitment to creativity on its stages\, within its community and online. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Oxford Playhouse\, including travel\, access and venue information.

SUMMARY:August Wilson's Fences
DESCRIPTION:August Wilson’s Fences\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout August Wilson’s Fences\n\n\n\nA gripping story of family\, race and the American Dream. \n\n\n\nA Headlong\, Leeds Playhouse\, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and HOME Manchester production \n\n\n\nDirected by Daniel Bailey \n\n\n\n“You born with two strikes on you before you come to the plate.” \n\n\n\nTroy is a former baseball player who could’ve gone pro. He spends his days collecting garbage and his evenings spinning stories for family and friends. He is funny\, charismatic and fiercely proud. He’s also a man with flaws\, shaped by a lifetime battling a world that denies his dreams. And the scars run deep. \n\n\n\nHis wife\, Rose\, sees America changing. She dares to believe life can be different and dreams that their son\, Cory\, will have the freedom that Troy never did. But as Rose works to break the cycles holding her family back\, Troy’s frustration and bitterness threatens to tear them apart. \n\n\n\nAlive with rhythms of blues and jazz\, humour and heartbreak\, Fences is August Wilson’s Pulitzer prize-winning masterpiece. Set in the 1950’s\, it is a timeless and deeply human portrait of grief\, love and what it means to be a family in post-war Black America.  \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse’s associate partner Headlong returns to the stage with August Wilson’s landmark play\, Fences. One of the defining plays of the 20th century\, it returns to the UK for the first time in over a decade in a vital new production directed by award-winning director Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch\, West End). \n\n\n\nThis production is generously supported by Charles Holloway OBE. \n\n\n\nAugust Wilson’s Fences is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“A powerful piece of theatre.” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nThe Reviews Hub (For Headlong’s A Raisin in the Sun\, 2024) \n\n\n\n\n\n“Urgent\, fascinating… a moral thriller.” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nWhatsOnStage (For Headlong’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, 2026) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nStandard – from £15.00 \n\n\n\nConcessions – from £5.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 30 September 2026 at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nThursday 01 October 2026 at 2.30 pm \n\n\n\nThursday 01 October 2026 at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nFriday 02 October 2026 at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 03 October 2026 at 2.30 pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 03 October 2026 at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\nThis show has an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance:  \n\n\n\n12+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry.

SUMMARY:Jazz Emu: The Pleasure Is All Yours
DESCRIPTION:About Jazz Emu: The Pleasure Is All Yours\n\n\n\nMusical meteor Jazz Emu was born to please you. \n\n\n\nTotal and Utter Audience Satisfaction is his middle name – finally\, after a long and financially ruinous Deed Poll process. \n\n\n\nBut he’s feeling uneasy. DESCRIPTION:The Cureheads + Siouxsie and the Budgies \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Cureheads + Siouxsie and the Budgies \n\n\n\nTwo titans of the alternative tribute world unite for an unforgettable evening of post punk glamour\, gothic nostalgia\, and unexpected comedy\, as The Cureheads and Siouxsie & The Budgiees take to the stage for a show that celebrates the music\, the culture\, and the beautifully awkward adolescence of becoming a goth in the 1980s. \n\n\n\nThis is more than a tribute show — it’s a celebration of the culture that shaped a generation.
