DESCRIPTION:Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\nA major new exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries invites visitors to step into the remarkable world of birds\, exploring their beauty\, symbolism and fragility through art\, literature and science. \n\n\n\nWonder of Birds draws inspiration from The Book of Birds\, created by artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. DESCRIPTION:Dinosaurs Are Forever at Blenheim Palace\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dinosaurs Are Forever Exhibition  at Blenheim Palace\n\n\n\nFrom 11 August to 01 November 2026\, Blenheim Palace will host Dinosaurs Are Forever\, a major new exhibition by artist Jay Jay Burridge\, created in partnership with the Museum of Natural History\, University of Oxford.  \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the exhibition are five monumental sculptures of Megalosaurus\, the first dinosaur ever to be scientifically named.  \n\n\n\nDiscovered in Oxfordshire in 1824\, Megalosaurus changed our understanding of the natural world and helped lay the foundations of modern palaeontology. \n\n\n\nThe fossil remains of Megalosaurus are now on display at the Museum of Natural History\, University of Oxford. \n\n\n\nThese sculptures are not traditional museum reconstructions. Built from advanced modern materials and designed to be fully articulated\, the sculptures reimagine dinosaurs through a contemporary lens.  \n\n\n\nMaking their public debut at Blenheim Palace\, the exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to encounter the world’s first named dinosaur reimagined for the 21st century. SUMMARY:Playhouse Youth Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Playhouse Youth Theatre\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Playhouse Youth Theatre\n\n\n\nPlayhouse Youth Theatre is entering an exciting new chapter\, offering young people aged 12 to 16 (Years 7 to 11) the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of an original piece of theatre. \n\n\n\nWith co-creation at the heart of the programme\, participants will work alongside Youth Theatre leaders Lucy Findlay and Caitlin Kirby as creative collaborators\, devising original material in response to a set question. \n\n\n\nSessions and rehearsals will help participants develop performance skills\, build confidence in their creativity and imagination\, and discover the rewards of working collaboratively on an engaging project with new friends. \n\n\n\nThe project will culminate in a full-length production at Oxford Playhouse’s Burton Taylor Studio in July 2027.  \n\n\n\nAdditional sharings will take place at the end of each stage of the creative process\, including a Scratch Night following Stage One\, where the group will present the beginnings of their ideas\, and a Research and Development sharing at the end of Stage Two\, when the work begins to develop greater structure and meaning. \n\n\n\nSessions take place on Tuesday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.30pm in Oxford Playhouse’s Top Room\, with additional rehearsals potentially scheduled closer to performance dates. DESCRIPTION:When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\nAn immersive\, eye-opening\, heart-stirring journey through time. \n\n\n\nDirected by Erica Whyman and written by Natty Mark Samuels\, Helen Eastman\, and Afsaneh Gray. \n\n\n\nThis is the story of Paulette\, who was born in Jamaica\, crossed an ocean to expand her horizons and now\, in 1966\, she is determined to change the world. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \n\n\n\nJoin ‘When the Blackbird Sings’ in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive.  \n\n\n\nYou will be invited to hop aboard a bus to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand.  \n\n\n\nThe journey will end at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n\n\n\nBefore You Arrive \n\n\n\nThis is a promenade production\, meaning the performance takes place across several locations in Oxford. Audience members will travel between locations primarily by bus\, with one short walking section of approximately 0.75 kilometres. \n\n\n\nThe performance begins in Blackbird Leys\, the starting venue is to be confirmed. Here tickets will be checked on arrival before the show begins. \n\n\n\nPlease avoid bringing large or heavy bags with you. The performance will last 2.5 hours and there will be some drinks and snacks incorporated. \n\n\n\nDuring the Performance \n\n\n\nOnce the show begins in Blackbird Leys\, audience members will board a bus which forms part of the performance itself. The route travels through Temple Cowley\, Cowley and into Oxford city centre. \n\n\n\nAll audience members will have a seat on the bus\, and headphones will be provided so you can hear the performers clearly throughout the journey. \n\n\n\nWhile everything possible will be done to keep the performance running to schedule\, there may occasionally be slight variations to timings due to traffic conditions on Oxford’s roads. \n\n\n\nThe bus will stop on Oxford High Street for a short walking section of the production. One of the locations visited during this section is a faith building (a church). After this\, audiences will reboard the bus for the final journey north along Woodstock Road to the Schwarzman Centre (OX2 6GG)\, where the performance concludes. \n\n\n\nAfter the Show \n\n\n\nAt the end of the performance\, you are welcome to leave directly from the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\nFor anyone who has parked a car or left a bicycle at the starting point\, there will also be the option to take the bus back to Blackbird Leys after the show. It will be ensured that you can return easily to where you began your journey! Families can wander through the pumpkin field to pick their own farm-grown pumpkins and squashes in a rainbow of colours\, perfect for Halloween. \n\n\n\nThe experience offers plenty to keep everyone entertained. Guests can admire creative displays and installations in the beautifully decorated pumpkin tunnel\, enjoy a variety of interactive fete games\, whizz around the track on mini tractors\, and try their hand at mini golf.  \n\n\n\nStory corner and song time will run throughout the day\, while tractor and trailer rides provide the best view of the pumpkin patch. Children can also climb and play on the bale stack and are encouraged to dress up for a chance to win in the daily fancy dress competition. \n\n\n\nNew for this year the Music and Bar marquee will keep you entertained over lunch and give you the perfect space to rest your weary legs post pumpkin picking! \n\n\n\nChildren’s entertainer Bertie Slippers will be bringing the fun for the little ones with his hilarious songs\, puppets and bubbles throughout the day\, our first toddler friendly show starts at 9.30am especially for the 0-3 crowd. Bertie will perform again at 10.30am\, 12.00pm & 2.30pm – all ages welcome.  \n\n\n\nThe show is around 30 minutes long. You can meet the Pumpkin Queen in her palace in the pumpkin field. Halloweeny face-painting will be on offer\, why not come dressed up to really get in the mood! Tractor and Trailer rides around the farm will run all day and are free\, burn off some energy running around our mini sweetcorn maze – new for 2026. \n\n\n\nInformation boards will teach you all about the pumpkin growing cycle and just what goes into producing all of our thousands of pumpkins for October. If you cannot attend on the day you have booked\, you are welcome to pass your tickets on to friends and family who can enter the event with your booking reference – no need to let us know in advance.\n\n\n\nIf Rectory Farm cancels the event you are booked on\, a full refund will be issued.\n\n\n\nDogs on leads are allowed in the cafe and play area but not in the Pumpkin Patch event.\n\n\n\nOn event days\, there will be no access to the PYO field or site without a ticket. The shop\, cafe and wooden play area will be open as usual for all visitors\, and ready-picked pumpkins can be purchased here if preferred.\n\n\n\nWristbands will be issued to all visitors and inspected around the site.\n\n\n\nRectory Farm cannot guarantee that all pumpkin varieties will be available for picking every day.\n\n\n\nRectory Farm has made every effort to grow quality pumpkins. However\, they cannot guarantee that all pumpkins will last until 31 October.\n\n\n\nThe ground will be wet and uneven\, so wear wellies and bring weather-appropriate clothing.\n\n\n\nThe fields will not be closed on rainy days\, and tickets will not be transferable because of the weather.\n\n\n\nAll children under 16 must be closely supervised at all times.\n\n\n\nPumpkins can be paid for in the farm shop or the outdoor payment huts before leaving the site. Cash and card payments are accepted.\n\n\n\nThe ground is uneven in places on the farm\, making it likely difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs.\n\n\n\nThere will be plenty of food options at the event. Only food purchased onsite can be consumed at the event – no picnics please.\n\n\n\nPlease note that only food purchased on the premises can be consumed during your visit. No picnics\, please.\n\n\n\nThere is ample parking on site. Please be prepared for a ten-minute walk from your parking space to the ticket entry.\n\n\n\nPlease bring strong carrier bags to carry your pumpkins home. Rectory Farm can provide lightweight plastic bags for 10p each.\n\n\n\nStandard orange pumpkins and crown prince squashes will be charged at £1.20/kg\, reduced to £1/kg if a single pumpkin is over 8kg in weight. Any other varieties are charged at £2.50/kg.\n\n\n\nTractor/trailer rides are included in the ticket price but depend on the weather. They are run at the discretion of Rectory Farm based on weather and ground conditions.\n\n\n\nToilets can be found close to the event hub\, with additional toilet facilities in the play area behind the shop and café and in the pumpkin field.\n\n\n\nWe have ample parking on site. Please come prepared for a 10 minute walk from your car to the ticket entry. Please keep an eye on little ones – It is a working farm and there may be farm machinery around.\n\n\n\nThere will be structures and builds to display pumpkins – please do not let children climb on these for their own safety.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there\n\n\n\nPut postcode OX33 1HF in your Sat Nav then follow the road signs as you get closer. You will receive your race number in the post if you purchased race pack postage\, which will also contain your bag label and bag collection tab. \n\n\n\nPlease visit the tent that corresponds to your race number range. Any bag dropped at the bag drop must be a maximum of 45cm x 45cm x 25cm (normal backpack size).  \n\n\n\nLarger bags\, holdalls and any size suitcase\, will not be accepted. Random bag checks will also be in operation on event day by our security team – please follow all instructions if asked by one of our team. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get my race pack?+\n\n\n\n\nIf you purchased race pack postage when you signed up\, you should receive this in the post around 2 weeks prior to the event. Your address must be up to date on your registration at least 6 weeks before the event in order for these to be sent to the correct place as it will not be re-sent. \n\n\n\nIf you did not pay for race pack postage when registering\, you will need to collect your race pack from the collection point in the event Village on the Saturday prior to the event. The Helpdesk and collection desk will be located at Oxford University Parks (OX1 3RF) and it will be open from 10.00am to 5.00pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be anywhere for runners to change on the morning of the race?+\n\n\n\n\nThe organisers advise coming dressed ready to race so you can head straight to your start pen. After the three-and-a-half hours cut-off time\, runners will not be stopped. Instead\, stewards will ask any runners left to move to the pavement so streets can reopen. Their medals will still be waiting for them at the finish line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get to the Oxford Half Marathon?+\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, if you can’t get there by foot\, we advice you to travel by public transport. Any runners relying on travelling by car\, however\, should use either the Redbridge Park & Ride or Thornhill Park & Ride sites because the city centre will have various road closures in place on the day (more on these later). \n\n\n\nIN previouse events\, parking and bus tickets were available in advance (up to four days before the date of travel) via the RingGo app. Tickets provide return travel to central Oxford and 12 hours of parking. Anyone who has purchased in advance will just need to show the driver their RingGo app confirmation. Up to two adult tickets per car can be purchased in this way; if you have more than two adults travelling\, additional return travel can be bought in person on the day. \n\n\n\nThere are no train services from London that arrive in Oxford in time for you to make the start line on time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre there any road closures?+\n\n\n\n\nYes\, there will be a lot of road closures in place during the event – with the majority closing from 8.00am on Sunday (Holywell Street\, however\, will shut at 6.00am). Others will be closed from Saturday. \n\n\n\nRoads will then begin reopening gradually from 11.00am (Magdalen Street East and St Giles) until the final roads (Broad Street\, Museum Road\, and Parks Road) reopen at 6.0pm. \n\n\n\nFull details of road closures – including details of closures the day before the race – can be found at \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere are the best places for spectators?+\n\n\n\n\nBeing a city centre half marathon\, there is no bad place from which to cheer the runners as they go by. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of places where the route will provide an amazing backdrop for photos of friends and family out on the course and other spots where you’ll be able to see people go by twice as they loop back down the same road. \n\n\n\nCheck out the map for a better idea of where to stand – it may depend on where you think the person you’re supporting could most do with seeing a friendly face in the crowd. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be on-course entertainment?+\n\n\n\n\nPlenty. Most people thought that the 2024 performance was Steve’s best ever Friars show. \n\n\n\nFriars was closely involved with Genesis throughout their early career\, their first Friars appearance being in 1970 when they were paid the princely sum of £10 for two 45-minute sets.  \n\n\n\nIn 1972\, Friars thought the band was in danger of splitting up\, so a special Genesis Convention gig was organised at Watford Town Hall in June of that year to celebrate how good they were and to attract some press attention. It worked\, and Genesis eventually went on to be one of the biggest bands in the world.  \n\n\n\nGenesis’ Mike Rutherford said in 2021 that if it wasn’t for Friars\, the band may well have split up at that time. In 2022\, David Stopps presented Steve Hackett with the FA Cup (the Friars Aylesbury Cup). \n\n\n\nSteve Hackett – Best of Genesis & Solo Gems\n\n\n\nSteve Hackett’s timeless guitar work was woven throughout Genesis’ classic 70’s catalogue of albums. In recent years\, he and his outstanding touring line-up of Nad Sylvan (vocals)\, Jonas Reingold (bass\, backing vocals)\, Rob Townsend (saxophone\, flutes\, additional keyboards)\, Roger King (keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums and percussion) have brought many of these albums back to great acclaim.  \n\n\n\nFor the 2026 tour\, there will be two changes to the band. Lalle Larsson has taken over on keyboards from Roger and Felix Lehrmann will take over from Craig on drums. \n\n\n\nSays Steve: “I’m really looking forward to returning to Aylesbury in 2026.” \n\n\n\nSteve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and first played Friars Aylesbury in June 1971. He quickly gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band’s classic line up alongside Peter Gabriel\, Tony Banks\, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins.  \n\n\n\nSteve’s intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977)\, including the classic Selling England By The Pound. \n\n\n\nAfter leaving Genesis at the end of 1977\, Steve’s solo career\, which now spans more than 30 albums\, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar.  \n\n\n\nSteve is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognised in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR. \n\n\n\nHackett’s compositions take influences from many genres\, including jazz\, classical and blues. For his studio works\, The Night Siren (2017) and At The Edge Of Light (2019)\, Hackett explored the influences of world music.  \n\n\n\nRecent tours have seen Hackett celebrate his time with Genesis\, including a spectacular 2018 tour in which he realised a long-held ambition to perform the works of Genesis live with his band and an orchestra. \n\n\n\nThe lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic proved to be a particularly creative period for Hackett.
