She has been returning ever since. \n\n\n\nElisabeth often includes music by Robert Schumann in her programmes and her finale tonight is his Carnival-Jape from Vienna. Schumann was staying in the city\, trying without any success to interest the Viennese publishers in his music journal. \n\n\n\nIt was a bleak time\, he was homesick and missing his beloved Clara. SUMMARY:Wonder of Birds Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\nA major new exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries invites visitors to step into the remarkable world of birds\, exploring their beauty\, symbolism and fragility through art\, literature and science. \n\n\n\nWonder of Birds draws inspiration from The Book of Birds\, created by artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. Global perspectives include imagery from The Book of the Fixed Stars and the poetic journey of The Conference of the Birds. \n\n\n\nEnhancing the experience\, a specially commissioned soundscape by sound artist Jason Singh immerses visitors in birdsong and natural environments\, while artist duo Daniel & Clara present an interactive ‘Rewilding Imagination field guide’. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Wonder of Birds poster\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 02 May 2026 to Sunday 03 January 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nThe Treasury\, Weston Library

SUMMARY:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future
DESCRIPTION:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\n34: The Critical Raw Materials Shaping Our Future is a major new exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History explores the hidden materials that power modern life — from smartphones and batteries to medical equipment and jet engines. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines the 34 raw materials considered essential to the UK’s future\, revealing the global supply chains\, ethical challenges and scientific innovations behind the minerals that underpin everyday technology. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford’s Oxford EARTH Programme and departments across the physical\, life and social sciences\, the exhibition explores how increasing demand for green energy and digital technology is transforming the global race for critical materials. \n\n\n\nVisitors can discover why substances such as lithium\, cobalt and rare earth elements are so important to modern society\, why supply chains are becoming increasingly fragile\, and how scientists and industry are searching for more sustainable and ethical ways to source\, use and recycle these materials. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive displays\, scientific research\, historic objects and contemporary technologies\, the exhibition examines the future of extraction\, sustainability and resource security\, while highlighting the environmental and geopolitical challenges linked to critical raw materials. \n\n\n\nDesigned for audiences of all ages\, the exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks\, workshops\, tours and family activities exploring the science\, ethics and global impact of the materials shaping our future. \n\n\n\nWhat are critical raw materials?\n\n\n\nCritical raw materials are those essential to key technologies but their supply may be limited\, unsustainable or unethical. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. The UK government includes 34 raw materials on its designated critical list\, but lists vary from country to country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\naluminium\n\n\n\nantimony\n\n\n\nbismuth\n\n\n\nborates\n\n\n\ncobalt\n\n\n\ngallium\n\n\n\ngermanium\n\n\n\nhafnium\n\n\n\nhelium\n\n\n\nindium\n\n\n\niridium\n\n\n\niron\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nlithium\n\n\n\nmagnesite\n\n\n\nmagnesium\n\n\n\nmanganese\n\n\n\nnatural graphite\n\n\n\nnickel\n\n\n\nniobium\n\n\n\nphosphorus\n\n\n\nplatinum\n\n\n\nrare earth elements (REEs)\n\n\n\nrhenium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nrhodium\n\n\n\nruthenium\n\n\n\nsilicon\n\n\n\nsodium\n\n\n\ntantalum\n\n\n\ntellurium\n\n\n\ntin\n\n\n\ntitanium\n\n\n\ntungsten\n\n\n\nvanadium\n\n\n\nzinc\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\n\nEntry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\nBooking is required for organisations/groups of more than ten people visiting on the same day.\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: \n\n\n\n\nMonday to Sunday from 10.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nLast entry at 4.45pm\n\n\n\nClosed on 24\, 25\, & 26 December\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nPlease contact the friendly team at the museum by telephone (01865 272 950) or email (foh@oum.ox.ac.uk) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\nClick images to expand \n\n\n\n\nBattery Ores\n\n\n\nBismuth\n\n\n\nCobalt\n\n\n\nDysprosium\n\n\n\nHalite\n\n\n\nREEs\n\n\n\n\nImage credit: Sarah Bell

Oxford-based artist Saad Qureshi invites people to describe what paradise represents or looks like to them\, and translates their hopes and dreams into sculptural mindscapes.  \n\n\n\nOn Paradise features recent and newly commissioned works by Qureshi\, including pieces inspired by the paradisial imaginings of communities in Oxford. Curated by anthropologist Paul Basu\, Qureshi’s remarkable works are juxtaposed with historical objects drawn from the University collections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event. DESCRIPTION:Yomi Ṣode: The Hatching\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Yomi Ṣode: The Hatching\n\n\n\nWhat are we born into? What do we inherit\, carry\, and what are we burdened with? \n\n\n\nThe Hatching is a new performance from award-winning poet and playwright Yomi Ṣode\, exploring the layered themes of belonging\, identity\, and responsibility in a world that isn’t equal.  \n\n\n\nTold in three parts\, Ou Topos (no place)\, Eu Topos (good place)\, and The Custodians\, The Hatching asks what it means to be born into systems we didn’t choose. It examines structures like law\, media\, and politics\, while also reflecting on the moral and personal choices we make within them.  \n\n\n\nDrawing from Yomi’s poetry collection Manorism\, alongside new work and contributions from both emerging and established poets\, the show blends poetry\, spoken word\, movement and audio-visual storytelling. It considers how the roles we play today might shape the future.  \n\n\n\nThis is not just a performance. It is a space for reflection\, reckoning\, and radical imagination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £16.34 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 03 November 2026 at 7.00pm

SUMMARY:Iphigenia at Aulis
DESCRIPTION:Iphigenia at Aulis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Iphigenia at Aulis\n\n\n\nPresented by Oxford Classical Drama Society \n\n\n\nBy Euripides \n\n\n\nIn a new English translation by Alexander Lafferty\, Evelyn Watterson\, and Nathaniel Denton \n\n\n\nDirected by Wally McCabe with Kelly Yu \n\n\n\nTo spill blood for his nation\, a father is called to first sacrifice his own. \n\n\n\nThe infamous “thousand ships” of the Greek armada muster in the port town of Aulis\, all set to reclaim Helen from the Trojans. Yet the winds refuse to blow. \n\n\n\nAfter weeks of waiting\, their prophet divines the cause: for hunting her sacred deer\, the goddess Artemis has taken ire against Lord Agamemnon\, commander of the fleets. \n\n\n\nShould the Greeks wish to sail to Troy\, she demands the blood of a virgin at her altar. Agamemnon sends for his wife. And requests she brings their young\, unwed daughter. \n\n\n\nTwo and a half thousand years on\, Iphigenia at Aulis presents one of the most psychologically wrought tales from ancient myth\, and asks: how can any of us – a father\, a citizen\, a nation – come to justify acts of violence – to others\, to ourselves? \n\n\n\nThis year’s production of the Oxford triennial Greek Play places Euripides’s final tragedy in a Celtic world. \n\n\n\nExpect a tartan-clad Achilles\, Greek generals in Irish saffron\, and a chorus dancing to flutes and fiddles\, with live accompaniment from a traditional céilí band performing an original score by University of Oxford music student Peter Hardisty. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £5.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 04 to Saturday 07 November 2026 \n\n\n\nWednesday and Friday at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nThursday and Saturday at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry. \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse not only produces and tours its own theatrical productions\, but it also fosters creativity through its Artists in Residence program and the Playhouse Plays Out series\, which brings unique events to various locations across the county. \n\n\n\nThe theatre’s Participation Team engages over 15\,000 individuals annually\, offering an extensive range of activities\, including post-show discussions\, workshops\, work experience opportunities\, holiday programs\, a youth theatre\, and a company for young performers. \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse stands dedicated to its mission of being a Playhouse for all\, striving to ignite inspiration and bring about transformative experiences through its commitment to creativity on its stages\, within its community and online. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Oxford Playhouse\, including travel\, access and venue information.

SUMMARY:Plain Things Wonders Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:About Plain Things Wonders Exhibition\n\n\n\nPlain Things Wonders tells the story of how paying attention to nature can make plain things into wonders. \n\n\n\nMarking 400 years since the publication of Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum (1626)\, the exhibition unfolds histories of citizen science\, lay participation in natural observation\, and how projects like Robert Hooke’s Micrographia (1665) and Gilbert White’s Natural History of Selbourne (1789) discover wonder in plain things. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition connects the science of natural history with the art of illustration\, attention and visualisation. It asks how book art makes the ordinary stuff of nature beautiful\, and how the long history of observation links with modern ecological challenges. \n\n\n\nCome and embrace the opportunities to notice the plain things of the natural world in your everyday life. \n\n\n\nCurators \n\n\n\n\nDr Kathryn Murphy\, Oriel College and Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nToby Stinson\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Kiera Chapman\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Ollie Douglas\, Curator of Collections\, Museum of English Rural Life\n\n\n\nStephanie Holt\, Faculty of History\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nProfessor Yadvinder Malhi\, Oriel College and School of Geography and the Environment\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 05 November 2026 to Sunday 29 August 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Stephen Emmerson\, Translation of Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge by Rainer Maria Rilke\, London 2015.\, Cons.Res. 43._2. SUMMARY:The Annual Charles Simonyi Lecture: Venki Ramakrishan
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Charles Simonyi Lecture: Venki Ramakrishan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Annual Charles Simonyi Lecture: Venki Ramakrishan\n\n\n\nJoin Marcus du Sautoy and Venki Ramakrishan for the 2026 Charles Simonyi Lecture\, Why We Die: The New Science of Ageing and the Quest for Immortality. \n\n\n\nHumans have obsessed about ageing and mortality ever since we became aware of it. In the last few decades\, we have begun to understand the underlying biological causes of ageing that eventually lead to death. \n\n\n\nIn Why We Die: The New Science of Ageing and the Quest for Immortality\, Venki Ramakrishan will discuss the fundamental facts and promising approaches to combat ageing\, as well as the social and ethical consequences of extending life. \n\n\n\nAbout Venki Ramakrishnan \n\n\n\nVenki Ramakrishnan grew up in India and left at the age of 19 for the United States. After a long career there\, he moved in 1999 to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge\, England. \n\n\n\nHe works on the structure and function of the ribosome\, an enormous molecular complex that reads the genetic information on mRNA (itself copied from a stretch of DNA) to synthesise the proteins they specify. \n\n\n\nHis work also showed how many antibiotics work by blocking bacterial ribosomes\, which could help to design better antibiotics. For this work\, he shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. \n\n\n\nFrom 2015 to 2020\, he was president of the Royal Society. Ramakrishnan is also the author of a popular memoir\, Gene Machine\, a frank description of the race for the structure of the ribosome and the science and personalities involved\, and Why We Die\, about the biology of ageing and our current efforts to combat it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £5.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 06 November 2026 at 5.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry.

SUMMARY:Word Power
DESCRIPTION:About Word Power\n\n\n\nA celebration of words\, voices and everything in between. \n\n\n\nWords have power. But they can also misbehave. \n\n\n\nWord Power returns this November for another gloriously unpredictable evening of spoken word\, poetry\, performance and lyrical experimentation at The Old Fire Station. \n\n\n\nForget any idea of what a poetry night is supposed to sound like. \n\n\n\nWord Power brings together an eclectic collection of voices\, styles and perspectives — from abstract hip-hop lyricism and political wordplay to poems about foxes\, relationship rants\, theatrical storytelling\, surreal observations and\, yes\, some magnificently unnecessary toilet humour. \n\n\n\nSome pieces will make you think. Some might move you. Some will make you laugh. And some may leave you wondering what on earth just happened. \n\n\n\nThat’s rather the point. \n\n\n\nAt its heart\, Word Power is simply a celebration of what happens when people are given the space to play with language – whether that’s poetry\, rap\, theatre\, storytelling\, rhythm\, rhyme\, ranting\, whispering or something that stubbornly refuses to fit into any particular box. \n\n\n\nThere is no house style and no requirement to arrive armed with a beret and an existential crisis. \n\n\n\nJust real voices\, good words and different ways of seeing the world. \n\n\n\nCome for the poetry. \n\n\n\nStay for the foxes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nStandard – £8.00 \n\n\n\nPay more – £11.00 \n\n\n\nPay less – £5.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 06 November 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours 30 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Old Fire Station\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Fire Station in Oxford is an arts centre with a unique social mission\, combining creativity with community impact. Located in the city centre\, it hosts a vibrant programme of theatre\, exhibitions\, music\, comedy\, and workshops. \n\n\n\nIt shares its space with the homelessness charity Crisis Skylight Oxford\, supporting people experiencing homelessness through training and opportunities in the arts. By bringing artists\, audiences\, and vulnerable communities together\, The Old Fire Station aims to challenge inequality and inspire positive change. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about The Old Fire Station\, including travel\, access and venue information.
