SUMMARY:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future
DESCRIPTION:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\n34: The Critical Raw Materials Shaping Our Future is a major new exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History explores the hidden materials that power modern life — from smartphones and batteries to medical equipment and jet engines. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines the 34 raw materials considered essential to the UK’s future\, revealing the global supply chains\, ethical challenges and scientific innovations behind the minerals that underpin everyday technology. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford’s Oxford EARTH Programme and departments across the physical\, life and social sciences\, the exhibition explores how increasing demand for green energy and digital technology is transforming the global race for critical materials. \n\n\n\nVisitors can discover why substances such as lithium\, cobalt and rare earth elements are so important to modern society\, why supply chains are becoming increasingly fragile\, and how scientists and industry are searching for more sustainable and ethical ways to source\, use and recycle these materials. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive displays\, scientific research\, historic objects and contemporary technologies\, the exhibition examines the future of extraction\, sustainability and resource security\, while highlighting the environmental and geopolitical challenges linked to critical raw materials. \n\n\n\nDesigned for audiences of all ages\, the exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks\, workshops\, tours and family activities exploring the science\, ethics and global impact of the materials shaping our future. \n\n\n\nWhat are critical raw materials?\n\n\n\nCritical raw materials are those essential to key technologies but their supply may be limited\, unsustainable or unethical. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. The UK government includes 34 raw materials on its designated critical list\, but lists vary from country to country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\naluminium\n\n\n\nantimony\n\n\n\nbismuth\n\n\n\nborates\n\n\n\ncobalt\n\n\n\ngallium\n\n\n\ngermanium\n\n\n\nhafnium\n\n\n\nhelium\n\n\n\nindium\n\n\n\niridium\n\n\n\niron\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nlithium\n\n\n\nmagnesite\n\n\n\nmagnesium\n\n\n\nmanganese\n\n\n\nnatural graphite\n\n\n\nnickel\n\n\n\nniobium\n\n\n\nphosphorus\n\n\n\nplatinum\n\n\n\nrare earth elements (REEs)\n\n\n\nrhenium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nrhodium\n\n\n\nruthenium\n\n\n\nsilicon\n\n\n\nsodium\n\n\n\ntantalum\n\n\n\ntellurium\n\n\n\ntin\n\n\n\ntitanium\n\n\n\ntungsten\n\n\n\nvanadium\n\n\n\nzinc\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\n\nEntry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\nBooking is required for organisations/groups of more than ten people visiting on the same day.\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: \n\n\n\n\nMonday to Sunday from 10.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nLast entry at 4.45pm\n\n\n\nClosed on 24\, 25\, & 26 December\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nPlease contact the friendly team at the museum by telephone (01865 272 950) or email (foh@oum.ox.ac.uk) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\nClick images to expand \n\n\n\n\nBattery Ores\n\n\n\nBismuth\n\n\n\nCobalt\n\n\n\nDysprosium\n\n\n\nHalite\n\n\n\nREEs\n\n\n\n\nImage credit: Sarah Bell

SUMMARY:Plain Things Wonders Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:About Plain Things Wonders Exhibition\n\n\n\nPlain Things Wonders tells the story of how paying attention to nature can make plain things into wonders. \n\n\n\nMarking 400 years since the publication of Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum (1626)\, the exhibition unfolds histories of citizen science\, lay participation in natural observation\, and how projects like Robert Hooke’s Micrographia (1665) and Gilbert White’s Natural History of Selbourne (1789) discover wonder in plain things. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition connects the science of natural history with the art of illustration\, attention and visualisation. It asks how book art makes the ordinary stuff of nature beautiful\, and how the long history of observation links with modern ecological challenges. \n\n\n\nCome and embrace the opportunities to notice the plain things of the natural world in your everyday life. \n\n\n\nCurators \n\n\n\n\nDr Kathryn Murphy\, Oriel College and Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nToby Stinson\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Kiera Chapman\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Ollie Douglas\, Curator of Collections\, Museum of English Rural Life\n\n\n\nStephanie Holt\, Faculty of History\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nProfessor Yadvinder Malhi\, Oriel College and School of Geography and the Environment\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 05 November 2026 to Sunday 29 August 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Stephen Emmerson\, Translation of Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge by Rainer Maria Rilke\, London 2015.\, Cons.Res. 43._2. SUMMARY:Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love
DESCRIPTION:Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love\n\n\n\nAn Oxford Playhouse Production  \n\n\n\nDirected by Oxford Playhouse Artistic Director Mike Tweddle   \n\n\n\nWhat if silence is the greatest proof of love? \n\n\n\nWitty\, poignant and exquisitely observed\, Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love is a profound portrait of a family facing up to the truth. Written with Rattigan’s characteristic emotional precision\, it asks how far we’ll go to protect the people we love the most.  \n\n\n\n1970s London. Celebrated literary critic Sebastian and his wife Lydia\, a refugee from wartime Estonia\, present a picture of a tired marriage. When an old friend arrives and their son starts questioning their motives\, a carefully maintained web of loyalty and deception begins to unravel.  \n\n\n\nFollowing the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\, Oxford Playhouse is proud to produce this landmark drama for Spring 2027. \n\n\n\nDirected by Artistic Director Mike Tweddle and marking the 50th anniversary of the playwright’s death\, this is an opportunity to see Rattigan’s rarely performed\, penultimate play brought vividly to life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Mike Tweddle’s visionary production” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nWhat’s on Stage   \n\n\n\n\n\n“An astonishing piece of unmissable stagecraft” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nThe Reviews Hub  \n\n\n\n\n\n“A definite must-see masterpiece” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nTheatre & Arts Reviews \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nPriority booking opens Friday 04 September at 12.00pm \n\n\n\nPublic booking opens Friday 11 September at 12.00pm \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 13 February to Saturday 06 March 2027 \n\n\n\nSaturday 13 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nMonday 15 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nTuesday 16 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nWednesday 17 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nThursday 18 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nFriday 19 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 20 February 2027 at 2.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 20 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nTuesday 23 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nWednesday 24 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nThursday 25 February 2027 at 2.30pm \n\n\n\nThursday 25 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nFriday 26 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 27 February 2027 at 2.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 27 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nTuesday 02 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nWednesday 03 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nThursday 04 March 2027 at 2.30pm \n\n\n\nThursday 04 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nFriday 05 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 06 March 2027 at 2.30pm \n\n\n\nSaturday 06 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nAge guidance:  \n\n\n\n14+ \n\n\n\nContent guidance: \n\n\n\nThis show contains discussion of terminal illness and death\, the Holocaust\, forced migration\, racist language\, strong language and representation of alcohol consumption. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry. \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse not only produces and tours its own theatrical productions\, but it also fosters creativity through its Artists in Residence program and the Playhouse Plays Out series\, which brings unique events to various locations across the county. \n\n\n\nThe theatre’s Participation Team engages over 15\,000 individuals annually\, offering an extensive range of activities\, including post-show discussions\, workshops\, work experience opportunities\, holiday programs\, a youth theatre\, and a company for young performers. \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse stands dedicated to its mission of being a Playhouse for all\, striving to ignite inspiration and bring about transformative experiences through its commitment to creativity on its stages\, within its community and online. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Oxford Playhouse\, including travel\, access and venue information.

Performances will include the whole of Tubular Bells I in full\, along with extended sections of Tubular Bells II and III\, plus the worldwide hit single Moonlight Shadow. \n\n\n\nOne of the most pioneering and influential musicians of all time\, Mike Oldfield’s visionary Tubular Bells series spans three albums over 27 years.  \n\n\n\nTubular Bells was created in 1971 and released in 1973; Tubular Bells II was released in 1992 (the filmed premiere from Edinburgh Castle remains one of the most viewed musical events ever); and Tubular Bells III was released in 1998 (with the excerpt of Far Above the Clouds featured in the 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony). \n\n\n\nWith each album\, Oldfield expanded on the incredible themes and theatrical variations he first composed at just 17 years old\, continually innovating and pushing boundaries. \n\n\n\nRobin Smith\, the Grammy-nominated Musical Director of the show\, was completely mesmerised by Tubular Bells the moment he heard it. He studied Composition at the Royal College of Music\, spent several years touring the world as a piano player\, and was the principal pianist of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before meeting Mike Oldfield over 30 years ago. \n\n\n\nSmith has collaborated with Oldfield for more than three decades\, conducting performances of the Tubular Bells albums at iconic locations such as Edinburgh Castle\, Horse Guards Parade\, and the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. \n\n\n\n“Following our incredible previous tours where we played sell-out shows at Cadogan Hall\, the Royal Festival Hall\, and Sydney Opera House\, it’s a great pleasure and we are thrilled to continue our musical journey in the UK for 2027. \n\n\n\n“This is a wonderful opportunity to visit new venues\, connect with new audiences\, and share Michael Oldfield’s beautiful music with long-time fans and new listeners alike. SUMMARY:The Waste Land: An Evening of T.S. Eliot
DESCRIPTION:The Waste Land: An Evening of T.S. Eliot\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Waste Land: An Evening of T.S. Eliot\n\n\n\nThe Waste Land\, probably T.S. Eliot’s most famous poem\, was published in 1922. Rich in classical and cultural references\, it is often seen as a response to the devastation of the First World War. \n\n\n\nYet beneath its haunting imagery lie wit\, humanity and a surprising sense of hope. \n\n\n\nThis special event offers a contextual introduction to both the poem and its creator\, providing an engaging guide to one of the most influential and enduring works of modern literature. \n\n\n\nAcclaimed actor Nathaniel Parker will perform The Waste Land alongside Eliot’s celebrated The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Reflecting on the work\, Nathaniel was lucky enough to read The Waste Land at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and fell in love with it. \n\n\n\nA passionate advocate for poetry\, he regularly shares readings with audiences through his popular Instagram account. \n\n\n\nThe performance is directed by Giles Taylor\, actor\, director\, author and classicist. \n\n\n\nHaving worked alongside Nathaniel on stages from Stratford and Chichester to London and Broadway\, Giles will guide audiences through the poem’s many layers\, illuminating the references\, themes and ideas that continue to fascinate readers more than a century after its publication. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nOnline booking for this event opens at 12.00pm on Friday 11 September 2026. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 18 March 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nAge guidance:  \n\n\n\n12+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry.
