About Avocet Theatre Company
Avocet Theatre Company – formerly St John’s Drama Group – is an innovative and evolving theatre group in Banbury.
The group specialises in theatrical shows, filmed performance, comedy, devising, multimedia and community events.
Avocet Theatre Company (ATC) is run by a team of dedicated volunteer specialists who aim to give anyone aged between 8 and 108 the chance to be part of unique and ground-breaking theatre and entertainment.
ATC operates from its own dedicated studio – ATC Studios – which includes a rehearsal room, practice space and a set, costume and props store.
ATC is also proud to be a member of NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association).
ATC was formed from what was St John’s Drama Group – set up by Tom Greening, a Banbury Pantomime regular, who worked as a caretaker at St John’s Primary School in Banbury.
St John’s Drama Group closed in 2015 when, sadly, Tom passed away after a battle with cancer. Several returning and new members formed a new group – Avocet Theatre Company – to continue Tom’s legacy.
The group settled on the name ‘Avocet’ – the name of the road where one could find St John’s Primary School.
