About Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition

The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce.

Born in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict.

Bile of Beans

The collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe.

Everyday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime.

Down!

Influenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures, the paintings instead speak through objects, buildings, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war.

The exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. Visitors of all ages are welcome, with interactive features including a reconstructed 1940s bedroom and creative activities for children.
