About Oxford’s Black & Muslim migration stories

This seminar is one of a new six-part event series taking place this autumn, hosted by Oxford University’s Community History Hub. The events will showcase a range of innovative local historical projects run by, or in partnership with, community historians.

Participants will learn about the latest new research being conducted on Oxfordshire’s diverse histories, as well as gaining new skills that could help shape personal project ideas.

On 07 November, participants will hear about the migration and community histories of local Black and Muslim residents of Oxfordshire, from two project teams recently funded by the Community History Hub.

  • The ‘Place for We’ team has been exploring the ways in which African-Caribbean migrants to Oxford have worked, played, protested and built lives in the city, from the mid-twentieth century to today. Hear from Euton Daley (Unlock the Chains Collective) and Junie James (ACKHI): two of Oxford’s foremost Black History researchers, who have years of experience between them in building community archives and sharing their histories via plays, exhibitions, publications, and Oxford’s legendary ‘Cowley Road Carnival’.
  • The ‘Muslim History of Oxford’ team has been collecting stories to build a new oral history archive of Muslim community experiences living in Oxfordshire. Sadiya Ahmed (Director of Everyday Muslim) and Dr Aleena Din (postdoctoral researcher at Manchester University) will be discussing the process of building this new archive and will showcase what it tells us about the diverse lived experiences of Muslims who have come to Oxford from all over the world.

The event is free and everyone is welcome, but please note that the number of spaces available is limited, so do book in advance. If you have any questions about the event, you are welcome to contact Dr Priya Atwal (Community History Fellow) via email at priya.atwal@history.ox.ac.uk.
