About

The Sheldonian Theatre, an exquisite Grade I listed building in the heart of Oxford, is the official ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford. It hosts some of the University’s most significant occasions, including matriculation, graduation ceremonies, Encaenia and Congregation.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1664 and 1669, this unique historic venue opens its doors to the public whenever not in University use. It can also be hired for concerts, lectures, talks, meetings and a range of other events, making it one of the city’s most distinctive cultural spaces.

Leading architectural historian Sir Howard Colvin captured its enduring importance:

“Elegant and strong in design, marvellously rich in craftsmanship, the Theatre has admirably served its purpose for over 350 years and today still provides a dignified and superb setting for ceremonial occasions.”

Situated in Oxford’s medieval city centre, the Sheldonian Theatre serves as the principal assembly room of the University and the regular meeting place of Congregation, the governing body of the University. All public ceremonies are performed here, most notably the annual Encaenia.

The University acquired the site shortly after the Restoration, and the present theatre was erected between 1664 and 1669. The project was entirely funded by Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury and former Warden of All Souls, whose generosity is commemorated in the building’s name.

The architect, a young Christopher Wren – then Professor of Astronomy at Oxford – drew inspiration from Roman theatres, adopting a D-shaped plan based on classical designs. Unlike their open-air arenas, however, Wren was compelled to devise an innovative roof structure suited to the English climate, one of his earliest major architectural achievements.
