About The Effect

University of Oxford Student Season: Trinity Term 2026

By Lucy Prebble

‘There’s no such thing as side effects, they’re just effects you can’t sell.’

In a clinic in a London suburb, Raushen Pharmaceuticals are trialling an experimental new drug. It might cure depression. It might make you fall in love. Or it might just be a placebo.

Lucy Prebble’s searching, romantic play probes medical ethics, whether we can ever trust our emotions, and the messy human business of falling in love.

Following this year’s acclaimed runs of Uncle Vanya, Company and The Flick, Fennec Fox Productions returns with a striking interpretation of a contemporary classic.
