The Waste Land, probably T.S. Eliot’s most famous poem, was published in 1922. Rich in classical and cultural references, it is often seen as a response to the devastation of the First World War.
Yet beneath its haunting imagery lie wit, humanity and a surprising sense of hope.
This special event offers a contextual introduction to both the poem and its creator, providing an engaging guide to one of the most influential and enduring works of modern literature.
Acclaimed actor Nathaniel Parker will perform The Waste Land alongside Eliot’s celebrated The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Reflecting on the work, Nathaniel was lucky enough to read The Waste Land at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and fell in love with it.
A passionate advocate for poetry, he regularly shares readings with audiences through his popular Instagram account.
The performance is directed by Giles Taylor, actor, director, author and classicist.
Having worked alongside Nathaniel on stages from Stratford and Chichester to London and Broadway, Giles will guide audiences through the poem’s many layers, illuminating the references, themes and ideas that continue to fascinate readers more than a century after its publication.
