Blood and Ice by Liz Lochhead

About Blood and Ice by Liz Lochhead
The story of Mary Shelley and the creation of Frankenstein. In the stormy summer of 1816, the Shelleys, Lord Byron, and Mary’s stepsister Claire, fleeing scandal and debt at home, gather on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Byron suggests that each write a ghost story, and thus is planted the seed from which Frankenstein will grow. The extraordinary lives of these celebrated Romantic writers, fascinating as artists, lovers, and advocates of social reform, culminate in tragedy.
Mary is haunted by her losses and by the outcast creature depicted in her most famous creation.
Liz Lochhead, formerly Scotland’s equivalent of Poet Laureate, brings lyricism and wit to her account of the turbulent lives of the brilliant, mercurial, and convention-breaking Shelley–Byron circle.
What the critics say
