Treadwell launches literary dinner series in Oxford with The Great Gatsby

Treadwell brings literature to the dinner table with new Oxford series

Literature and dining come together this autumn as Treadwell at The Store, Oxford launches a new series of Literary Dinners in partnership with Blackwell’s Oxford.

The series will pair some of Britain and America’s best-known novels with specially created menus, live readings, music and details inspired by the world of each book.

The first evening, devoted to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, takes place on Friday 20 November at 7.00pm.

Broadcaster, cook and author Rosemary Shrager will guide guests through the evening, with selected readings from Fitzgerald’s novel alongside a menu inspired by the abundance and spectacle of Gatsby’s parties.

The menu includes devilled eggs, Oyster Rockefeller, ham hock terrine with sausage Wellington, harlequin salad and Oxford sauce, followed by corned beef hash with crispy hen’s yolk. Dessert includes lemon curd madeleine and lemon posset.

The evening is designed to evoke Gatsby’s world rather than recreate it literally, with music and considered details adding to the atmosphere.

Each guest will also receive a copy of The Great Gatsby to take home, supplied in partnership with Blackwell’s Oxford.

The Literary Dinner series will continue into 2027, with Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility on Friday 19 March, followed by Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited on Friday 11 June.

The March dinner will take inspiration from the world of the Dashwood sisters, including country houses, hospitality and courtship. The June event will bring the series back to Oxford through Waugh’s world of Charles Ryder, Sebastian Flyte and Brideshead Revisited.

The series also has a charitable element, with £10 from every £95 ticket donated to Oxford-based hospice charity Sobell House.

Tickets for the Great Gatsby Literary Dinner are now available, with future dinners available to book three months ahead.
