About The Slow & Steady
The Slow & Steady is a newly refurbished pub on Abingdon Road in Oxford, reopened in September 2024 by Dodo Pub Co — their fourth venue in Oxford and ninth overall.
Housed in a Grade II-listed former coach house designed in 1897 by H.T. Hare (the same architect as Oxford’s Town Hall), it retains many original features while embracing a fresh, fun aesthetic.
Inside, you’ll find a cosy-meets-contemporary interior with original features, neon touches, and a unique upstairs “library room” lined with books and available to hire for events. There’s also a games room with foosball and arcade machines, and a medium-sized beer garden for sunny afternoons.
On tap are a rotating selection of real ales (it’s a free house), plus craft beers, wines and a cider from the Cotswold Cider Co. The food menu covers all the Dodo favourites – think juicy burgers, Neapolitan-style pizzas, loaded fries and wings, alongside a solid weekend brunch offering.
The Slow & Steady has quickly earned a place in the hearts of locals, thanks to its laid-back vibe, friendly staff and regular events like quiz nights, RunTribe meet-ups and more. Dog- and wheelchair-friendly.
Whether you’re after a laid-back pint of real ale, a delicious burger or pizza, an upbeat quiz night, or simply a cosy spot to meet friends (indoor or outdoor), it’s become a crowd-pleaser. The addition of a games arcade and a well-utilised library-style event space ensures there’s something for everyone.
What makes it special:
- Free house offering up to three changing real ales on handpump and a cider from Cotswold Cider Co
- A popular food menu featuring Dodo’s signature burgers, Neapolitan-style pizzas, chicken wings, plus weekend brunch
- Inviting spaces including a medium-sized garden, neon-lit interior, and a unique upstairs “library” room with books and tables – available for community events or private hire
- A fun arcade and games area upstairs, featuring foosball and classic arcade machines
- A strong community vibe, hosting regular events like quizzes (Tuesdays), RunTribe, and brunch sessions
