Leading bus operators in Oxfordshire are seeking the next crop of talented apprentice engineers as part of a nationwide recruitment drive.
Oxford Bus Group – which includes Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel, Carousel Buses, Pearces Coaches and Pulhams Coaches – has launched the campaign to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, running from February 09 to 15.
The group is looking to recruit three apprentice engineers across its sites in Bourton-on-the-Water, Cheltenham, and Oxford or Didcot. Applications for the engineering apprenticeship programme are open until March 22, with successful candidates set to begin in July.
The programme offers apprentices the chance to develop real-world, transferable skills while earning qualifications and a wage. From day one, recruits will work with advanced zero-emission technology, initially learning about complex mechanical and electrical systems in the classroom before gaining hands-on experience on the job.
The apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with S&B Automotive Academy, one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship providers in the automotive sector.
Luke Marion, Managing Director of Oxford Bus Group, said: “Apprenticeships are vital in providing the skills and experience to forge exciting long-term careers in the bus and coach sector.
“We are proud to be offering three more apprenticeship opportunities across the business later this year and would urge anyone interested to visit the website for further details.
“Apprenticeships are a great way to upskill our workforce, while bringing more diversity and innovation into our business.
“This investment from parent company Go-Ahead has created an excellent opportunity for people considering a career in engineering and we are committed to broadening access for underrepresented groups, including women, into engineering roles.”
Mercedes Goodhall, who is currently undertaking a three-year engineering apprenticeship at Oxford Bus Company, shared her experience of the scheme.
She said: “Engineering is such an interesting and exciting field of work, and I’m always learning something new on my apprenticeship.
“I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about a career in the industry. It’s a great working environment where you are able to grow and develop.”
The Go-Ahead Group, the parent company of Oxford Bus Group, is providing significant financial support to successful applicants, including funded driving lessons and tests, to help remove barriers to starting a career in engineering. Apprentices will also benefit from dedicated mentors throughout the programme.
Go-Ahead Group is an award-winning apprenticeship provider, with engineering training centres across the UK, including London and Manchester.
