Ready to hear science, and stories of illness, differently?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) affects millions, yet it’s often invisible, misunderstood, and stigmatised.
Sounds of Tolerance showcases how Oxford’s IBD community has collaborated with University of Oxford researchers, composer Zakiya Leeming, and professional musicians to create brand new music shaped by their real stories and the science behind IBD.
The evening explores the idea of tolerance: both the science of how the body’s tolerance to beneficial bacteria breaks down in IBD, and, metaphorically, the stigma and resilience people living with the condition navigate everyday.
Expect an evening full of dynamic, moving music, alongside insights into new research and a behind-the-scenes glimpse at how patients, artists, and scientists collaborated – with a chance for you to join the conversation too.
From the creators behind Thanks for the Memories and the opera Dangerous Matter at the Royal Northern College of Music, Sounds of Tolerance brings another bold collaboration to the stage. Join us at the Old Fire Station for a unique chance to reflect on and celebrate the stories of illness we don’t normally hear.

About The Old Fire Station
