About Word Power

A celebration of words, voices and everything in between.

Words have power. But they can also misbehave.

Word Power returns this November for another gloriously unpredictable evening of spoken word, poetry, performance and lyrical experimentation at The Old Fire Station.

Forget any idea of what a poetry night is supposed to sound like.

Word Power brings together an eclectic collection of voices, styles and perspectives — from abstract hip-hop lyricism and political wordplay to poems about foxes, relationship rants, theatrical storytelling, surreal observations and, yes, some magnificently unnecessary toilet humour.

Some pieces will make you think. Some might move you. Some will make you laugh. And some may leave you wondering what on earth just happened.

That’s rather the point.

At its heart, Word Power is simply a celebration of what happens when people are given the space to play with language – whether that’s poetry, rap, theatre, storytelling, rhythm, rhyme, ranting, whispering or something that stubbornly refuses to fit into any particular box.

There is no house style and no requirement to arrive armed with a beret and an existential crisis.

Just real voices, good words and different ways of seeing the world.

Come for the poetry.

Stay for the foxes.
