A long-established Kidlington day nursery has changed hands after more than three decades of family ownership, with the new owners pledging to continue its strong local reputation for early years education.
Cygnet Nursery, based on Evenlode Crescent in Kidlington, has been acquired by regional childcare operator Quackers Day Nursery & Pre-School following a confidential sales process managed by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co.
Founded in 1992 by David Smith, the nursery has become a familiar name for families across Kidlington and the surrounding area. The setting is registered for up to 72 children aged from birth to five years old and operates across three buildings on one site, with access to both patio and outdoor green space.
The nursery holds a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating and benefits from its location within a rural part of Oxfordshire while remaining accessible to major local employment areas through nearby transport links.
New chapter after family ownership
David Smith’s daughters, Sarah Barnett and Eleanor Smith, took over running the nursery in 2023 following their father’s death.
After 34 years as a family-owned business, the sisters decided to sell the nursery as they focused on their own careers and families, while also living further away from the setting.

The sisters said finding the right successor was central to the sale.
“We’re so happy that the nursery has been taken on by someone who will carry it forward in the same spirit as our dad did,” they said. “I believe it will go from strength to strength because of the dedication of the team and support from the management.”
Quackers Nursery takes over
The nursery has been purchased by Anthony Pickford, Director of Quackers Nursery Limited, who operates other childcare settings in the region.
Mr Pickford said the business had a strong foundation thanks to its existing staff team.
“We are delighted to have taken over the running of the setting. There is clearly a fantastic team in place offering high-quality childcare, and we are excited about the future ahead.”
Christie & Co’s childcare and education team managed the sale, with Director Jassi Sunner overseeing the process.
The sale attracted significant interest, with more than 50 enquiries and 13 viewings during the marketing period.
Ms Sunner said maintaining the nursery’s reputation and legacy was a key priority for the former owners.
“Sarah and Eleanor were very clear that selling to the right person was the most important aspect of the disposal, in order to continue their father’s strong reputation and therefore legacy.”
She added that the new owner would build on the nursery’s foundations while working with the existing team to develop the business further.
The sale price has not been disclosed.
