Oxfordshire County Council has approved a transport delivery plan setting out how £245.5 million of government funding is intended to support roads, buses, active travel, electric vehicle infrastructure and road safety across the county through 2029–30.
The council’s Cabinet approved the Local Transport Delivery Plan on Tuesday 15 September and agreed to submit it to the Department for Transport. The plan covers the period from 2026–27 to 2029–30 and is intended to set out how the funding will be prioritised across Oxfordshire.
Among the areas identified for investment are highway maintenance, including repairs and preventative work; improvements to local bus services, ticketing, vehicles and passenger information; and projects supporting walking and cycling.
Funding will also support Oxfordshire’s electric vehicle infrastructure strategy and schemes associated with the county’s Vision Zero programme, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Oxfordshire’s roads by 2050.
The council said the programme also includes a pilot scheme for heavy goods vehicle interventions, intended to support more sustainable freight movement across the county.
A mobility hub is also planned for Benson, with the aim of creating a more sustainable local transport network.
Councillor Gareth Epps, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said the plan represented the latest stage of investment across the county’s transport network.
The council said funding for active travel had increased, although it remained below the level it had expected, while some government funding had been reduced.
Councillor Liz Leffman, Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repairs, said the government funding for highway maintenance was in line with expectations but that there remained a shortfall, with the county council also contributing its own funding towards road repairs and maintenance.
The Local Transport Delivery Plan is subject to annual review. The finalised document is expected to be published by the government later this year.
