About Gormenghast
Oxford Theatre Guild presents…
Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, adapted by John Constable
Nothing ever changes in Gormenghast Castle…
An heir is born to the ruling family of the Groans: no change.
Seeking sanctuary, kitchen boy Steerpike throws himself through Lady Fuschia’s bedroom window: no change.
Forgotten sisters Cora and Clarice dream of power, cook Swelter plots a murder, and Countess Gertrude’s cats bring her the bodies of slaughtered ravens: no change, no change, no change?
Adapted from Mervyn Peake’s beloved series of books, Gormenghast is an ambitious tale of power, duty, and family.
Originally commissioned and produced by the David Glass Ensemble, Gormenghast has become a landmark production for the stage, as imposing and grotesque as the castle it seeks to bring to life.
Review
“A gloriously impossible realization of Mervy Peake’s soaring flight of fancy.”
