About Moonrakers Picnic Concert

The Moonrakers Picnic Concert has become an annual early evening summer event in the beautiful Amphitheatre at Waterperry Gardens.

The band of four present sparkling multi-instrumental music and song played on harp, cello, fretted instruments, flutes, keyboard and female/male vocals. There will be chorus songs, traditional and contemporary folk music, and beautiful harmony singing. The extended interval allows you to wander the Gardens and enjoy your picnic.

Four-piece Moonrakers perform sparkling, distinctive arrangements of traditional British folk songs and tunes, alongside their own compositions. Their multi-instrumental concerts feature harp, cello, fretted instruments, whistles, and female/male vocals. Informative, varied, and suitable for all ages, their live shows blend ancient mystic ballads, beautiful lyrical tunes, and joyous chorus songs.

Moonrakers have earned wide praise for both their live performances and recordings, described as “startlingly talented” by the Oxford Times, with an “exquisite sound” by the BBC, “The real deal” by The Living Tradition, “Wonderful arrangements” by RnR Magazine, and “Uplifting, sensitively crafted songs and tunes” by FATEA magazine.

Their music has been featured in the BBC television series ‘Beyond Paradise’, on Radio 4, and across numerous local radio and podcast programmes

Current line-up comprises:

  • Becki Luff – Celtic harp; has performed at prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall and The Sage.
  • Jacqui Johnson – cello; formerly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and a regular soloist.
  • Jon Bennett – bouzouki, guitar, whistles, mandolin, and vocals; an award-winning songwriter and published composer.
