About Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation

Pollution of the Thames River and its tributaries has reached record levels in the past two years. Locally, outrage has tended to be mixed with an acute sense of loss, disempowerment, frustration, and grief. Tamesis Unweaving aims to develop ways of addressing and acknowledging these emotions, through collective discussion, introspection, creativity, and action.

This workshop will focus on the Tamesis robe, currently on display in the Lower galleries of the OFS, and use textile art to provide a framework for talking about and processing ecological emotions, putting names to undefined feelings, re-stitching our connections to the more-than-human-world in an approachable, accessible way, and helping our community find pathways towards taking action, through citizen science, art, and activism.

Led by artist Anya Gleizer, the workshop will involve quilting and embroidery, drawing, and water-based painting. The results of each workshop will be added (with your permission!) to the Tamesis Robe, a tapestry garment whose train is a to-scale large-scale map of the Thames Watershed. Over time, the piece, and the workshops, will tour to more communities along the Thames River watershed, adding further depth to the collective artwork.
