John Radcliffe Hospital

The John Radcliffe Hospital (affectionately referred to as the JR Hospital) is the is the main hospital in Oxford.

The hospital is a key part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and is the largest of the Trust’s hospitals, covering around 66 acres in Headington, about three miles east of Oxford city centre.

JR Hospital provides acute medical and surgical services including trauma, intensive care and cardiothoracic services. In particular, the hospital offers:

  • Neurosciences (neurology and neurosurgery)
  • Cardiothoracic services
  • Children’s services (including a large children’s hospital within the JR)
  • Maternity and neonatal care
  • Trauma and emergency care
  • Specialist Surgery and Intensive Care
  • Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology

Facilities at the hospital aslo include:

  • 24/7 Emergency Department
  • On-site Helipad for Air Ambulance
  • State-of-the-art Research & Teaching Facilities

The John Radcliffe site also houses many departments of Oxford University Medical School, is home to the George Pickering Education Centre and base for most medical students who are trained throughout the Trust.

JR Hospital is one of the largest and most important teaching hospitals in the UK. It’s also one of the few hospitals in the UK that combines acute medical services with cutting-edge research, training, and advanced diagnostics. The JR is often the referral centre for complex cases from across Oxfordshire and beyond.
