Outhwaite, known for television roles including EastEnders, Hotel Babylon and New Tricks, presides over an evening in which polite suburban hospitality gradually gives way to something considerably more combustible.
Beverly and her husband Laurence have invited new neighbours Angela and Tony round for drinks. Sue from next door joins them, though the real party is happening at her house, where her teenage daughter Abigail is making enough noise to become an increasingly unavoidable presence.
The drinks continue. The conversation loosens. The small talk becomes flirtation, social competition and marital dispute.
And then there is Beverly.
Leigh’s 1970s portrait of suburban aspiration, social class and materialism remains sharply funny because beneath the period details is something timeless: the desire to impress, to belong and to appear just a little more successful than the people around you.
The Stratford East production received strong reviews during its sold-out 2024 run, and this London revival gives audiences another opportunity to see Leigh’s dark comedy play out in all its increasingly uncomfortable glory.
