About Magdalen Road Studios
Nestled in East Oxford, Magdalen Road Studios is a thriving hub for contemporary art and creativity. Established in 1999 and now a registered charity, it provides affordable, professional workspaces for artists. The studios also feature the Magdalen Art Space (MAS), which hosts a changing programme of exhibitions, workshops, and events.
The studios house over 20 artists working across disciplines, from painting, drawing, and printmaking to film, textiles, ceramics, photography, and installation. Each brings a unique practice, creating a dynamic community where ideas and inspiration are shared.
More than just a collection of workspaces, Magdalen Road Studios is run collectively, with artists contributing to exhibitions, fundraising, building upkeep, and community outreach. This spirit of collaboration extends beyond the walls of the studios through public engagement, regular open studio events, and annual participation in Oxfordshire Artweeks, when visitors are invited to explore the workspaces and meet the artists in person.
The Magdalen Art Space also acts as a public-facing gallery, showcasing solo and group exhibitions throughout the year. Recent and upcoming projects include Unbodied, East Oxford Portraits, and a lively calendar of workshops and talks.
For artists wishing to become involved, there are two routes: applying for a studio tenancy, which requires being an active, exhibiting practitioner committed to the studio community; or joining as an Associate Artist, a membership scheme that offers opportunities to exhibit, take part in events, and maintain a presence within Oxford’s artistic landscape.
With its mix of affordable studio provision, public exhibitions, and community focus, Magdalen Road Studios plays a vital role in Oxford’s cultural life – a place where professional practice flourishes, audiences engage with contemporary art, and creative connections are made.
