About SJE Arts Oxford
Overview
SJE Arts, based at the Grade I listed Church of St John the Evangelist on Iffley Road, hosted a wide range of events over the years – choral, orchestral, opera, piano, chamber, jazz, folk, pop, and poetry readings. Most were promoted by outside organisations and groups, with a few organised by SJE Arts itself.
History of the Church
The church was designed by Victorian architect George Frederick Bodley as a place of worship for the Anglican religious order, the Society of St John the Evangelist. Known affectionately as the ‘Cowley Fathers’, the monks carried out their ministry in the poorest parts of this district.
Plain chant was an important part of their worship, and the design and simplicity of the church’s decoration reflected this need, providing a superb acoustic. Especially suited to choral music, it was a space that worked well for almost every kind of performance, with the exception of heavy drumming.
In the 1980s, the few remaining fathers relocated to their London base. The mission house on Marston Street, adjoining cloister, and the church were taken over by St Stephen’s House — an Anglo-Catholic theological college and Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford. St Stephen’s House ordinands, graduate, and PGCE students made regular use of SJE for worship.
Closure and Legacy
SJE Arts brought its long-running concert programme to a close on 30 June 2025, following a review by St Stephen’s House, which concluded that continuing to subsidise the arts programme was no longer financially sustainable. A small number of previously committed bookings took place in July, but the venue’s wider public programme ended.
Despite the closure of the SJE Arts concert programme, the church building itself remains open. As a historic, Grade-listed site, it continues to serve as a chapel for St Stephen’s House and is available for venue hire for concerts, recordings, exhibitions, and other events.
SJE Arts International Piano Series
One of SJE Arts’ best-known initiatives – the SJE Arts International Piano Series – continued in a new home. From Autumn 2025, the series was re-established as the St John’s International Piano Series, hosted at St John’s College, Oxford, with additional concerts at St Hilda’s College during the 2025/26 season. The move ensured the survival of this acclaimed strand of programming, opening with pianist Steven Osborne on 28 October 2025 in the college’s intimate, acoustically rich auditorium.
Cultural Significance
The closure of SJE Arts’ public programme marked the end of a distinctive chapter in Oxford’s cultural life, but the legacy of its concerts and the continued use of the church building for music and events ensure that SJE remains an important part of the city’s arts landscape.
