A new accessibility initiative aimed at making bus travel easier for passengers with additional needs has been rolled out across Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire by Pulhams Coaches.
The Helping Hand scheme enables passengers to apply for a free card displaying a short written instruction that can be shown to drivers when boarding. The card removes the need for customers to verbally explain their requirements, supporting those with visible and hidden disabilities.
The initiative has already proved successful with sister companies Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel, and was officially introduced across Pulhams services on Friday 20 February.
There are 12 versions of the card, covering a range of needs including deafness, visual impairment and requests for extra time to be seated before the bus pulls away.
The reverse side can optionally include emergency contact details, offering reassurance for passengers living with conditions such as Alzheimer’s, dementia or epilepsy.
Luke Marion, Managing Director of Pulhams, said:
“With the expansion and growth of Pulhams in recent years, and a series of new routes too, it felt like the right time to deliver the Helping Hand scheme via the network.
“It’s proven to be a popular and useful initiative for both the Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel, and reinforces our commitment to providing accessible transport for all.
“There is no charge to obtaining a Helping Hand card, which allows our drivers to be made aware of a customer’s needs or requirements without the passengers having to verbally communicate it.”
The cards are not a permit for free travel but are also recognised in some shops, taxis and leisure venues such as cinemas.
Founded in 1880 by the Pulham family, Pulhams originally transported passengers and goods by horse and cart. Today, the company operates bus, coach and school transport services across the Cotswolds and surrounding areas.
Recent community initiatives have included a partnership with Guide Dogs to offer volunteer puppy raisers free travel and the launch of a Chatty Bus scheme aimed at tackling loneliness and isolation.
Passengers can apply for a Helping Hand card by contacting Pulhams directly.
