A new comic script and series concept built around a troupe of wildly expressive dog characters performing their own chaotic theatrical show has been released by Didcot-based writer Esmé Bates.

Titled HOWLS!, the project imagines a chaotic stage production run entirely by canine personalities, combining theatrical satire, musical comedy and ensemble humour through a cast of exaggerated characters designed for stage, screen, animation or radio.

At the centre of the concept is Murphy the Host, the upbeat presenter trying to hold the production together, alongside Chichi Royale, a glamorous diva convinced every appearance deserves applause, Ruff the Chaos Dog, whose unpredictability disrupts rehearsals, Sergeant Shepherd attempting to restore order, the anxious Beagle Intern navigating showbusiness, and two Yorkshire Terrier critics delivering sharp commentary from the royal box.

Written with strong visual humour, recurring musical moments and comic interruptions, the script builds a playful theatrical world where personality clashes and affectionate parody drive the comedy.

Based in Didcot, Bates continues to develop original creative work across theatre, television concepts, comedy writing and speculative storytelling.
