Oxfordshire County Council has announced a series of temporary closures at household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) across the county during May and June to allow for essential cleaning and maintenance work.

Six sites will each close for two days, with closures scheduled on quieter weekdays to minimise disruption. The council confirmed that no two sites will be closed at the same time, ensuring residents continue to have access to alternative facilities where needed.

The work will include deep cleaning and general improvements aimed at enhancing safety and the overall customer experience. This will involve jet washing surfaces and structures, repainting lines and safety areas, and carrying out routine maintenance.

The affected sites and dates are:

  • Oakley Wood, near Wallingford: Thursday 07 and Friday 08 May
  • Alkerton, near Banbury: Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 May
  • Ardley, near Bicester: Thursday 14 and Friday 15 May
  • Stanford in the Vale, near Faringdon: Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 May
  • Drayton, near Abingdon: Thursday 21 and Friday 22 May
  • Dix Pit, Stanton Harcourt: Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 June

All sites are expected to reopen at 8.00am on the following day after their scheduled closure.

The council has advised residents to plan ahead, particularly as booking slots will not be available for any site on the days it is closed.

Visitors are reminded that appointments must be booked online in advance via the council’s website, with slots typically available up to two weeks ahead or as little as 30 minutes before arrival, subject to availability.

Further closures are also planned for Redbridge HWRC in Oxford later in the year. In addition to a scheduled deep clean, the site is expected to shut for around three months during the summer to allow for essential safety works. Full details of those closures will be announced in due course.

Residents who are unable to wait for their local site to reopen are encouraged to use alternative recycling centres during the closure periods. Additional information, including site availability and booking guidance, can be found on the Oxfordshire County Council website.
