Leys Pools & Leisure Centre has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award recognising its transformation into a community-focused wellbeing hub serving residents across Blackbird Leys.
The Oxford leisure centre has been named a finalist in the Transformational Innovation category at the 2026 ukactive Awards, celebrating organisations that have successfully reimagined leisure services to improve health, wellbeing and community engagement.
The recognition follows a major programme of investment and partnership working that has reshaped the centre since April 2024, moving beyond a traditional leisure facility to become what operators describe as an Active Wellbeing Hub tailored to the needs of one of Oxford’s most disadvantaged communities.
Among the most significant additions has been the creation of a new Active Zone featuring soft play, climbing and Active Tag activities, alongside a £1.2 million Youth Hub developed with input from local young people.
The changes have been accompanied by a sharp rise in participation. Junior visits increased from 3,899 in 2024 to 13,925 during 2025, while the Youth Hub now attracts around 200 young people every week.
Overall attendance at the centre has also grown substantially, rising by 59% from 124,995 visits in 2024/25 to 198,120 in 2025/26. Health and fitness membership has increased to more than 1,800 people.
Operators also say the centre’s estimated social value has risen from £1.08 million to £1.59 million, reflecting its wider contribution to improving health, reducing inequalities and strengthening community connections.
The transformation has been delivered through a partnership between Serco Leisure and Oxford City Council, working alongside Oxfordshire County Council, NHS organisations, Active Oxfordshire and local community groups to develop services that respond to the needs of local residents.
Ian Phelps, Chair of Leisure Solutions Community Trust, said the national recognition reflected the collaborative effort behind the project.
“Being named a finalist in the ukactive Awards is fantastic recognition for the team and our partners who have worked together to transform Leys Pools & Leisure Centre into a true community wellbeing hub.
“Our focus has been on creating welcoming, accessible opportunities for children, young people and families, particularly those who may not have previously seen leisure centres as places for them.
“This recognition reflects the positive difference the centre is making to health, wellbeing and community connection across Blackbird Leys.”
Councillor Mark Lygo, Oxford City Council’s Cabinet Member for a Healthy, Fairer Oxford, welcomed the announcement.
He said the centre had become far more than a low-cost sports facility, highlighting the important role it now plays in supporting young people through initiatives including the Youth Hub.
The winners of the 2026 ukactive Awards will be announced on 08 October at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre.
Leisure Solutions Community Trust and its operating partner Serco Leisure manage five leisure facilities across Oxford on behalf of Oxford City Council.
