Young people across Oxford and surrounding communities are being encouraged to make the most of affordable bus travel this summer after the extension of Oxford Bus Company “Get Around for £1” initiative.

The scheme allows passengers aged 18 and under to travel for just £1 on all CityZone routes when using a Get Around Card.

Originally launched in 2017, the initiative applies across services operated by Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel and Pulhams within the CityZone network. The zone covers all routes inside Oxford’s ring road, alongside services to Kidlington, Botley, Cumnor, Hinksey Hill, Kennington, Blackbird Leys, Horspath, Barton and Wheatley.

Passengers can unlock the discounted travel by purchasing a Get Around Card for £15 either online or from Oxford Bus Company’s Gloucester Green travel shop. Cards remain valid for three years, with regular users often recouping the cost after around eight journeys.

Oxford Bus Company says the scheme is designed to encourage younger passengers to travel sustainably while also making it easier and more affordable to access education, employment, leisure activities and social opportunities.

Luke Marion, Managing Director of Oxford Bus Company, said:

“Get Around for £1 has been a flagship initiative to incentivise young people to travel sustainably since its launch almost a decade ago.

“If a Get Around Card user is travelling to school or college – or to meet up with friends and family during the holidays – every journey in our CityZone is capped at £1, making travel by bus a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

“It’s tremendous value, and an offer we encourage everyone aged 18 or younger to take full advantage of – especially during the summer months where Oxford and the city’s surrounds has so much to offer to local people and visitors alike.

“Even better, cards remain valid for three years or to the end of the month for a person’s 19th birthday – whichever comes first.”

To apply for a Get Around Card, passengers must provide proof of age such as a passport, birth certificate or driving licence. Those applying in person at the travel shop will also need a passport-sized photograph.

More information about the Get Around Card scheme is available via the Oxford Bus Company website.
