Frilford Heath Golf Club has welcomed some of the world’s leading amateur golfers after hosting The R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in Oxfordshire.

The prestigious championships took place across the club’s Red and Blue Courses, bringing an international field of elite senior amateur players to the 450-acre heathland golf estate near Oxford.

The event was praised by competitors, with both championship winners highlighting the quality of the courses and the work carried out by the Frilford Heath team to prepare for the tournament.

Men’s Senior Amateur Champion Bryan Hoops, who finished 10-under-par across four rounds after a final round of six-under-par 66, described Frilford Heath as a “fantastic venue” for the championships.

He praised the course conditions and championship-standard greens, saying the venue provided a “true championship test”.

Women’s Senior Amateur Champion Lara Tennant also praised the welcome she received from the club’s staff, volunteers and members after winning the title by five shots.

The championships attracted competitors from across the globe, with the winners earning exemptions into further prestigious events including The Senior Open at Gleneagles, the US Senior Amateur Championship and the US Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Russell Stebbings, Managing Director of Frilford Heath Golf Club, said hosting the championships was a “privilege” and praised the efforts of the club’s greenkeeping team, staff, volunteers and members.

“I am immensely proud of our greenkeeping team, clubhouse staff, volunteers and members, whose dedication ensured the championships were a fitting showcase for Frilford Heath and for amateur golf,” he said.

The event adds to Frilford Heath’s long history of hosting high-level competitions, placing the Oxfordshire venue alongside other renowned championship venues including Walton Heath, Saunton, Woodhall Spa, Royal Dornoch and Ganton.

Founded in 1908, Frilford Heath features three championship courses and continues to be recognised as one of England’s leading venues for tournament golf.
