Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24
Angela Hewitt occupies a commanding position on the international stage, sought after as a recitalist and for collaboration with leading orchestras. Her many awards include Companion of the Order of Canada; an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II, and the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, given in recognition of a lifetime’s dedication to the music of J.S. Bach.
Angela’s programme is a joyful celebration of the Baroque. A lovely Italianate suite by Handel, with more than a hint of the opera aria, is followed by Bach’s sparkling baroque dances. The Haydn sonata brings a change of mood: grand and spacious, it is his final piano sonata and is generally accepted as his greatest.
Post interval, Handel’s delightful Chaconne precedes Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel. The theme is the Air from Handel’s B-flat major harpsichord suite, a simple melody Brahms teases, and toys with through twenty-five kaleidoscopic and brilliantly structured variations. Brahms greatly admired Handel. This is a wonderful tribute.
