A Celebration of Modern Craft: Yattendon Winter Market
Modern Makers Collective returns for the Yattendon Winter Market for a Celebration of Modern Craft. This year’s market presents an exceptional group of artists, designer-makers and craftspeople selected for their expertise and originality.
Each maker explores their craft in a unique perspective, from using traditional techniques applied in new and fresh ways to innovative ideas pushing the boundaries. An outstanding event, the market celebrates the varied and inspiring nature of Modern Craft.
With the festive season around the corner, a trip to the Christmas Tree-growing village of Yattendon on the 25 and 26 November is a must. The makers will be showcasing their hand-crafted work between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Entrance is only £2.
Make a day of it at one of the many fine lunch spots or beautiful walks, and return home laden with handmade delights. Discover everything from velvety smooth woodturning, flawless fine jewellery and sumptuous silk weaving to exquisite ceramics, lustrous glass sculpture and much more.
Visitors to Yattendon will be treated to the delights of local makers such as Andrew Hazelden with his beautiful tin glaze and lusterware pottery decorated with hand-painted shapes.
Artist Freya Barton will exhibit her vibrant paintings and painted interior pieces that bring joy into every home. Oxfordshire-based Yvette Phillips is another talented local artist who will be showcasing her work. Yvette’s exquisite embroidery art is inspired by nature and is a wonder to see.
Amongst the talented craftspeople participating in the market will be two stars of the BBC show “Make It at Market”. It is a fantastic opportunity to see and buy the work of glass artist Emmy Palmer and wood turner Lucinda Goulden, who were both featured on the BBC show.
Emmy’s glassware fuses handblown glass with knitting, resulting in her ethereal and colourful vessels. Woodturner and brushmaker Lucinda creates heirloom quality wooden homewares and traditionally crafted makeup and shaving brushes through the endangered practice of hand-tying natural fibres.
Many familiar favourites of the Collective will be at the market – the likes of leather craftswoman Victoria Baker with her handstitched bags and Albert Harvey with his handprinted textiles. The Collective’s new members include the exciting jeweller Von W, who uses raw textures and precious materials to create unique heirloom jewellery.
Jynsym Ong is another new Collective member. The Oxford-based ceramicist explores the unpredictable and nuanced surfaces achieved through wood-firing her pots. Also new to the market is Amy Whittingham, who creates glass sculpture and jewellery inspired by weathered rope & rusty chains, connecting the earth to the oceans.
