Work is set to begin next week on a significant upgrade to the play area at Friars Wharf in South Oxford, following community feedback calling for improved facilities for younger children and a more welcoming public space.
The project will see the removal of the existing large concrete mound, old multi-play climber and slide, making way for a refreshed and more inclusive play area designed to cater for a wider range of ages and abilities.
New equipment being installed includes two multi-play climbers with slides—one aimed at older children and one designed specifically for younger users — a swing for younger children, and a 3-metre cone net climber suitable for children of varying abilities.
Additional seating will also be introduced as part of the wider improvements.
Three newer pieces of play equipment located closest to the river will remain in place.
The refurbishment has been made possible through a generous donation from a local Oxford resident in memory of her late daughter, with additional funding provided by Oxford City Council. In recognition of the donation, the renewed space will be named Emily’s Playground at Friar’s Wharf.
Groundworks will be delivered by Oxford Direct Services (ODS), while specialist equipment installation will be carried out by play area provider HAGS.
To allow for the works to take place safely, the playground will be closed from Tuesday 02 June until Friday 03 July. The adjacent multi-use games area and sports cage will remain open throughout the works.
Commenting, Councillor Anna Railton, Deputy Leader, and Cabinet Member for Planning and Zero Carbon Oxford, said:
“I am delighted that works are about to start on the Friars Wharf playground thanks to the generosity of an anonymous private donor.
“There was really positive feedback in the consultation about the new scheme and it will be finished in time for the summer holidays, ready for children both sides of the river to enjoy.”
The project is expected to be completed in time for the summer holidays.
