New Theatre Oxford has partnered with The Store to mark the arrival of Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts this January, launching a city-centre mystery competition that invites Oxford residents and visitors to step into the world of the legendary detective.

To celebrate Inspector Morse’s return to his home city, the theatre and The Store have collaborated on a striking Inspector Morse–themed window display in the former Boswells window.

The installation features a fictional case that needs solving, encouraging passers-by to don their detective hats, study the clues and crack the mystery for a chance to win exclusive theatre prizes.

Those who successfully solve the case will be entered into a prize draw to win two tickets to see Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts at New Theatre Oxford, along with access to the Priority Club Bar on the night of the performance.

One particularly sharp-eyed sleuth will receive an additional upgrade, including seats in the theatre’s exclusive Director’s Box and a set of Inspector Morse books to take home.

Sylwia Adamowska, Marketing Manager at New Theatre Oxford, said:

“We’re incredibly excited about this partnership with The Store. Being able to use the iconic former Boswells window allows us to connect the dots between our theatre, Oxford and Inspector Morse in a really creative way.

“It’s also a brilliant opportunity to get people involved in solving their own mystery through the interactive window display, bringing the spirit of Morse out into our city.”

The competition also celebrates the enduring appeal of Inspector Morse, who first premiered on ITV on 06 January 1987 with the episode The Dead of Jericho. Nearly four decades later, the iconic detective continues to captivate audiences, making his return to Oxford in a brand-new stage production.

Starring Tom Chambers in the title role, Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts features a new story written by Alma Cullen, one of the original writers on the television series alongside Anthony Minghella and Danny Boyle.

The play follows Morse and DS Lewis as they investigate the sudden death of a young actress during a stage performance, uncovering a mystery linked to troubling events from Morse’s own past in Oxford 25 years earlier.

With a city-wide collaboration, an interactive mystery and the chance to win memorable theatre experiences, the partnership between New Theatre Oxford and The Store offers a unique way to celebrate the return of one of Britain’s most beloved detectives.
