The RISE programme by Henley Festival, a charitable initiative supporting emerging creatives, has announced the shortlist for its prestigious RISE Emerging Artist Prize—a new accolade designed to celebrate and uplift visual artists in the early stages of their careers.
The competition, open to UK-based artists over the age of 18 who are not yet represented by a commercial gallery, attracted a wide range of entries showcasing diverse and innovative approaches across painting, drawing, original print, textile, and mixed media disciplines. After a thorough selection process, the following artists have been shortlisted for the 2025 prize:
- Suki Berwick
- Paul Butterworth
- Curtis Chan
- Octavia Hands
- Susan Kellaway
- Jae Kwak
- Amy Lovell
- Helen Orton
- Raoul Orzabal
- Lucy Cordelia Richards
- John Sillence
From this talented group, three finalists will be announced on 09 May 2025. The top prize winner will receive £1,000, while two runners-up will each be awarded £500. Beyond the financial reward, all three finalists will also secure a coveted exhibition space at the Audi High RISE Gallery during the renowned Henley Festival, running from 09 to 13 July 2025. The value of this opportunity is estimated at £750, with additional transport expenses of up to £300 covered by the organisers.
Unlike many commercial platforms, Henley Festival takes no commission on any sales made during the exhibition, underscoring its commitment to empowering early-career artists. Each finalist will be invited to attend the festival in person and will receive complimentary tickets for two guests each evening of the event.
The judging panel comprises notable figures from the art and cultural sectors, including Jo Bausor (CEO, Henley Festival), Katie Newman (Managing Director, David Messum Fine Art), British artist Rebecca Swainston, and Emma Ellis (Head of RISE Programme Development). Judges were tasked with identifying artists demonstrating significant potential, meaningful creative expression, and technical skill.
Entrants were required to submit three to five original and unsold works, alongside a personal artist statement and optional video introducing themselves and their creative process, providing judges with a virtual “studio visit.” While a wide range of 2D media was accepted, digital art, photography, sculpture, and AI-generated work were excluded to maintain a focus on traditional and mixed media techniques.
With its eye firmly on fostering new voices in the arts, the RISE by Henley Festival programme continues to expand its reach and reputation. The RISE Emerging Artist Prize stands as a testament to its mission to break down barriers and provide meaningful platforms for underrepresented and undiscovered talent.
