Barclays Bank is preparing to relocate its longstanding branch on Cornmarket Street, moving just across the road to new premises.
This move forms part of the broader, ambitious redevelopment of Oxford’s Clarendon Centre, led by Lothbury Investment Management and approved by Oxford City Council in May 2022.

The current Barclays branch, located on the east side of Cornmarket near Broad Street, will move to the west side later this summer. The shift follows a trend among retailers adapting to the redevelopment, with notable moves including HMV, TK Maxx, and Tortilla, which have either relocated or closed their Cornmarket outlets in recent years to make way for the transformation.

Adding to the changes on Cornmarket, McDonald’s recently relocated from its premises at 57 Cornmarket Street, adjoining the Clarendon Centre, to a new location at 44 – 46 Cornmarket Street.
The new McDonald’s occupies the former site of the healthy food chain Leon and offers significantly improved seating capacity and a more spacious layout, replacing the mostly standing-room-only setup of the old branch. This move reflects a broader effort among businesses to adapt to the evolving retail landscape in Oxford’s city centre.

The Clarendon Centre redevelopment plans involve partially demolishing the existing building to create a striking new 226,547 sq ft mixed-use scheme. The project includes state-of-the-art R&D laboratories, Grade A office space, and student accommodation alongside an enhanced retail and restaurant offering.
A new public square will be created at the heart of the centre, designed to be open to all, with pedestrian and cycle links providing improved access to Frewin Court.
Additionally, the scheme will include public access to a rooftop area featuring cafés and restaurants, aimed at making it a lively and enjoyable space for visitors and residents alike. These plans are expected to significantly enhance the public realm and create a vibrant hub in the heart of Oxford’s shopping district.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “Our relocation is aligned with this exciting redevelopment and reflects our commitment to offering customers a modern, accessible banking experience. Though we are moving just across the street, the new branch will provide upgraded facilities to meet evolving needs.”
Local customers have expressed mixed feelings about the changes, welcoming the investment and regeneration while feeling nostalgic about some long-established businesses moving on. Many see the redevelopment as an opportunity for Oxford to maintain its position as a leading retail and cultural destination.
Barclays has assured customers that services will continue uninterrupted during the move, with temporary arrangements in place to ensure a smooth transition. The bank also confirmed its continued dedication to the Oxford community and looks forward to serving customers from its new, improved location.
As Oxford’s city centre evolves, Barclays’ new branch will remain a key fixture on Cornmarket Street, blending trusted banking services with a fresh and forward-looking presence.
