Free entry to National Trust places across Bucks, Berks and Oxfordshire with Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, returns from 12 to 21 September, giving visitors the chance to explore historic places and stories across the country. Supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the festival highlights the heritage and culture of communities nationwide.

As part of the celebration, a number of National Trust places in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire will be opening their doors for free on select dates — a perfect opportunity to enjoy the region’s history, gardens and landscapes.


Hughenden, Buckinghamshire

Friday 12 to Friday 19 September

The former home of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, Hughenden also played a secret role in the Second World War. Visitors can enjoy an art exhibition in the studybase by Buckinghamshire’s Visual Images Group, with work spanning paintings, ceramics and jewellery. The estate also offers waymarked walks, pleasure grounds, picnics in the orchard, and a children’s play area.


Cliveden, Buckinghamshire

Monday 15 to Friday 19 September

With glorious gardens overlooking the River Thames and extensive woodland and riverside walks, Cliveden offers something for everyone. During the week, there will be first-come-first-served house tours, sculpture and garden tours, as well as daily history talks. On Tuesday 16 September, join a special heritage tree walk at 10.00am or 2.00pm (pre-booking required).


Basildon Park, Berkshire

Monday 15 to Thursday 18 September

A Georgian mansion set within 400 acres of historic parkland, Basildon Park is famed as a filming location, from Pride and Prejudice to Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Visitors can explore the mansion, take in the rich September colours of the gardens, and learn more about the estate’s history.

Greys Court, Oxfordshire

Monday 15 to Thursday 18 September

This intimate family home, nestled in the Chiltern Hills, is celebrated for its glorious walled gardens and medieval ruins. September visitors can soak up the beauty of the dahlias and explore the abundant kitchen garden in the mellow autumn sun.

Stowe Gardens, Buckinghamshire

Monday 15 September

A vast landscape garden filled with lakes, temples and sweeping views, Stowe offers visitors free entry to Stowe Gardens, Stowe Parish Church, the Gothic Temple, Stowe House, the Temple of Venus, the Temple of Concord & Victory, and Cobham’s Pillar.

Highlights include a rare chance to tour the Gothic Temple, usually an exclusive Landmark Trust holiday cottage, and the chance to climb Cobham’s Pillar for breathtaking views (booking essential).

Chastleton, Oxfordshire

Sunday 21 September

A Jacobean gem preserved for over 400 years, Chastleton offers a rare time capsule with its textiles, Jacobite glass and family portraits. Visitors can stroll the newly restored gardens and wilderness walk, discover the origins of croquet on the lawns, and learn more about the bohemian family who lived there.
