Jo Stevens, Managing Director at Oxford Innovation Space, has been named Leader of the Year at the 2025 Institute of Economic Development (iED) Annual Awards.

The ceremony, held on 25 November at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester following the iED Annual Conference, celebrated excellence across the public and private sectors, with this year’s awards receiving a record-breaking number of entries.

Almost 60 submissions were received across seven categories, reflecting the growing recognition of economic development as a vital driver of regional growth. Shortlisted candidates were reviewed by an expert judging panel in September.

The Leader of the Year award specifically recognises professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, motivate their teams to succeed, and deliver meaningful impact through their strategic approach.

Jo’s nomination described her as a “recognised and highly respected leader in the business and innovation support industry,” highlighting her extensive experience across inclusive economic development initiatives.

As Managing Director, she oversees the UK’s and Ireland’s largest operator of innovation spaces, playing a central role in nurturing local economies through entrepreneur support, business growth and community-focused innovation.

Former iED Chair Bev Hurley CBE praised Jo’s influence and impact, noting: “Our judges highlighted how Jo Stevens’ leadership has transformed Oxford Innovation Space into the UK’s largest innovation centre operator. Her people-first approach, national influence, and commitment to inclusive growth and sustainability make her a truly standout leader.”

Reflecting on the award, Jo said the recognition was especially meaningful as it coincided with her 25th anniversary at Oxford Innovation Space.

“It has been a privilege to spend a quarter of a century working alongside talented colleagues, partners and communities who share a passion for driving inclusive economic growth through innovation,” she said. She also emphasised the transformative power of innovation centres in strengthening local economies and creating thriving places for talent and opportunity.

iED Executive Director Nigel Wilcock reaffirmed the purpose of the awards, noting the calibre of finalists and the vital role economic development practitioners play across the UK. He emphasised the importance of celebrating creativity, innovation and impact—qualities embodied by this year’s winners.

The Institute of Economic Development, established over 40 years ago, remains the UK’s leading professional body for economic development practitioners, championing best practice and the value of local and regional regeneration.
