Scientific Magnetics has completed the shipment of its 20th superconducting magnet designed for quantum computing applications, marking a significant milestone for the Oxfordshire-based manufacturer as demand for precision quantum technology continues to grow.

Based in Abingdon, the company has more than 30 years of experience developing advanced superconducting and resistive magnet systems, with specialist expertise in controlling environmental factors that affect qubit noise performance in quantum systems.

The latest shipment strengthens Scientific Magnetics’ position as a supplier of magnet technologies used in quantum computer development, covering design, manufacturing and site qualification.

Clint Gouveia said the delivery reflects growing momentum in the sector.

“Delivering our 20th superconducting magnet for quantum computing applications is a significant achievement for our team, who are working at the leading edge of the quantum computing revolution.

“With a further 18 systems in production and a strong forward order book, we are developing a promising position as a key supplier of the precision magnet systems needed to produce future quantum computers at scale.”

The milestone follows recent investment commitments announced by Rachel Reeves, who outlined plans to expand Britain’s quantum and artificial intelligence industries through £2.5 billion in funding.

The investment is intended to support domestic growth in emerging technologies and help UK firms scale while remaining based in the country. Industry forecasts suggest quantum computing could generate more than 100,000 jobs in the UK over the next 20 years, with an estimated economic impact of £212 billion.

Stuart Gall said the latest delivery highlights Scientific Magnetics’ growing role in future quantum systems.

“This delivery is a significant landmark for SciMag. With its combination of superconducting magnet technology and deep environmental expertise, the company is positioned right at the heart of this new technology, supplying essential components that underpin the qubit architecture needed to scale the industry at large.”

Scientific Magnetics also supplies advanced magnet systems for MRI, scientific research and medical physics. The company operates within the Magnetica Group and is majority owned by Avingtrans PLC.
